Lloyds TSB to scrap VISA Electron cards

From next week (4th May I think). LTSB is issuing no more Electron cards. All new cards which would have been Electron, damaged and lost Electrons will be sent a 2in1 card - VISA delta debit and cashpoint combined.

If you have an Electron, worth contacting them after next week for a free upgrade.

Ahhh, mystery solved. They told me that I had to make the change fast!

I downgraded from "Gold Service" debit card aka normal Visa Debit card in gold colour a few weeks ago. The people in Lloyds thought i was crazy and said it for was "dodgy people"/ "step down" and asked why i wanted it...also told couldn't be used on the internet.

I like it alot - no charges for booking at Ryanair, balance always up to date and i feel safer because i know it cant be used if i report it lost.

Not had any acceptance problems so far as kept my Egg money as backup but not had to use it.

I think if you were on the gold package then you will have been downgraded to the full 3-1 visa debit card not the 2-1 which is replacing Electron cards.
As both are debit cards it should not make any difference whichever you offer Ryanair as payment.
(If you meant Gold credit card then it would make a difference as would any credit card!)

Doesn't that defeat the object. Electron were issued over Visa to stop the customer spending money they didn't habe. ie the Basic bank account.

But, the banks are going to have their wings clipped when it comes to the size of penalty charges. So, they need to find more people to hit with the new smaller charges. :)

Possibly. But I thought basic bank accounts and electron cards were for the accounts they didn't reallt want, just a way of appeasing the government.

So not a group of people easy to make money out of:confused:

It was a Gold Service Visa Debit card.

I was offered a 3 in 1 card & 2 in 1 card but asked specifically for the electron version.

With the £1 flat fee & 2.75% conversion fee for using it in other currencies, I wont be using it abroad or on the non-UK websites!

Ryanair do charge a fee for using Visa Debit cards, the only one to escape is Visa Electron for some reason. The (Visa Debit/Maestro) card charge is less than credit card one.I read on this forum that some of the other low cost airlines do this too.

But otherwise, the 2 in 1 card is probably better and who uses the cheque guarantee function anyway?

My mum also got a letter from Yorkshire Bank who are now replacing their single function cashpoint card with a 2-in-one Maestro/Cashpoint card. and are discontinuing the single function card.

So now from Yorkshire Bank you can only get:

    Multi-Function Maestro/Cheque Guarantee/Cashpoint card

    Dual-Function Maestro/Cashpoint card.

Seems like the inferior Solo and Electron cards are now being pushed out of the market which is good news. This now seems like a good time for me to put pressure on The Abbey to replace my Electron card with a full VISA debit.

Why are they getting rid of VISA electron cards? I thought VISA electron cards are good for customers under 18 and those cards won't let anyone over drawn, and stuff like that, etc...

I can't seem to find any news about this on the internet... Anybody have a link, as I want to read more about it.

I guess customers under 18 will get a 2 in 1 VISA debit card (debit and cash card combined) then..

I know a VISA debit card is for 18 years old or above. If LTSB get rid of Electron cards, what will under 18 use? A cash card?
