where do u get the applaws and hilife from - belisarius
• If dogs eat faeces it's usually because there's something missing from their own diet - some nutrient or other. May be worth having a word with a vet about it...from experience they usually recommend Hills Science Diet, or whatever it's called which is hideously expensive.

Maybe try (gradually) changing the diet, making sure you have all bases covered nutrient wise and see if this helps?

All of my dogs in the past have (tried) to eat the cats poo and I think its just because dogs like disgusting smells & tastes! They are dirty animals and I do love dogs just not their habits!

yeah - dogs huh - you buy 'em the finest, purest, most nutritionally balanced food money can buy... and what do they eat...?

.... cat !!!!!!!! charming!
• Dogs will be happy on Wagg.....great food for dogs...and you can supplement with your own leftovers, which are perfectly acceptable.

Cats are completely different as they have very particular protein requirements and don't really like to drink water too much.

You should never feed a cat on dried food alone. Even the ones who claim to be top of their game are not suitable. Yes, they have high protein content but if you do your research (anyone can) you will see that it is PLANT PROTEINS!!

Not good for the long term health of cats. You need to find the best quality wet meat that you can or feed them on your own made up food, which includes grinding bones.

WolfSong i've done loads of reading up on the poo eating thing, and i have heard this theory about something missing from their diet. I don't think it's that though, i do think it's just tasty, she doesn't eat her own poo, just the kittys (and only my kitty, not the other cats lol).
I'm taking her to a vet today so i will ask him about the poo eating thing.

She eats cat sick aswell, which is essentially just soggy cat biscuits, obviously not very often but i have witnessed it :o

You aren't far wrong.
Cat poo should be virtually dry and nearly crumbly. It should not smell, should not have much water in it and should not be soft. If it is then the cat is losing too much fluid, not getting enough protein in the right form and is slowly damaging her kidneys.
Also, if your cats poo is like this, the dog eats it because it does have high protein and water, even if it is plant protein.

It depends very much which brand you buy - supermarket own brand dry foods and Go Cat are just 4% meat derivatives  then there are a large number of brands at between 20 and 35% meat.

Hills Science is 53%, Fish4Cats 60%, Orijen 75% and Applaws 80% meat. :T Surprisingly prices for all the premium brands are in the £4-6 per kilo range with no real correlation with meat content. Many of the higher meat content brands don't contain any cereals so where is the plant protein?

Got the Applaws online from petsupermarket - 7.5kg on sale for £30 (with free delivery) but they keep selling out soon as they get more stock in, so you have to keep an eye on it. If you can't get it there, next best is zooplus selling two 7.5kg bags for £70 (again, free delivery.) 7.5kg lasts my cat three months at 80g per day (so £10 per month buying at petsupermarket or £11.50 per month at zooplus ). Long, long sell-by dates on the Applwas (March 2011 on mine), so worth stocking up for the year now! I buy Hilife from the supermarket (Tesco or Sainsburys) at £4.99 for 12 pouches. I buy two boxes per month, and give him one pouch on 24 days of the month - the other days, he get scraps of meat from my plate. Hope that helps!

LMAO That was so funny & sooo true! I used to spend a small fortune on giving my dog the very best and she'd still try & eat cat poo & the likes so now she has pets@home own brand! LOL

If you want to feed Applaws (which i do, very good quality), you can actually get it cheaper from Sainsburys - its called Encore and made by the same people. I know the guy that owns the company through a mutual friend and its exactly the same ingrediants etc :)

Can you get this in anything other than 800g packs? That's all I can see on MySupermarket and it's more expensive per kg than the large Applaws packs.
