Never thought of mixing the cider vinegar in with their food - I'll give it a try.
I'd read about garlic, can't remember what it was but something put me off - either side effects or maybe that it's quite easy to overdose??
Anyway, I think the cider vinegar will work out cheaper as I buy it in bulk!0 -

Ooooh you've got me worried now...I didn't know you could overdose with garlic!!!
I've just done a search for cider vinegar and came across a site that sells in bulk for horses. They claim....It helps maintain the correct pH of the intestinal tract.
That will certainly be useful for my dog, as she suffers from bloat.
Can you tell me where you buy in bulk and how much you pay? When life throws you lemons...put them in a gin and tonic !!0 -

I was talking to a neighbour the other day about flea treatments and she has a friend who is a vet and they told them to give the dogs a garlic capsule once a week instead of buying all these treatments. She said that she never uses worm or flea treatments anymore and hasn't needed to for several years.0

That's very interesting, as is jamie's question too.
Our dog has fleas & our usual treatment didn't work at all this year
As so many people on different threads recommended Frontline, I bought it on line. Although he's not scratching half as much (yes we've treated bedding etc) I am still finding the odd flea on him. I'd be very interested in using vinegar/garlic too.Now thanks to Tommix & Queen Bear, now Lady Westy of Woodpecker

another one here that frontline has failed for. after spraying the whole house, now using advantage and stronghold alternately. seems to be doing the trick flea free now for 3 months
frontline has failed on alot of people round here, they have become so resistant to it.0 -

Cider vinegar - have looked in vain and can't find where I bought it. It is heavy so if you buy over the internet shipping is dear.
http://www.amazinganimal.co.uk/equimins-cider-apple-vinegar-litre-jerrycan-p-4680.html here 5 litres is £12.39 and the shipping is £8.50. But 5 litres is lasting me forever with 2 dogs and 9 hens - if you have a local farm supply/equestrian shop they'll have it. Otherwise the supermarket will be tons cheaper than flea products.
Another advantage is the fleas don't become resistant to cider vinegar. For myself I buy organic cider vinegar with the "mother" still in it - but am loathe to pay these prices for the animals. However, if you have a local producer you can buy it sooo much cheaper - just google it.
Garlic - it appears that what I've read in the past is apparently a myth possibly put about by flea killer manufacturers. Too much onion can cause a type of anaemia and someone has linked this to garlic but apparently that's wrong; apart from the fact that too much of anything can cause health problems.0 -
i have found this link which talks about using garlic and fleas becoming used to anything they get too much of:

One thing i will point out is that it says certain types of garlic can be used on dogs but are harmful to cats. the advert explains more, just thought it was worth mentioning that in the thread.Money makes the world go mad, the world go mad, the world go mad! :wall:0
