alternative to bt

we have a bt line in the house for my wife to remotely connect to the server and files at her office for work and for the e mails and internet.

is there an alternative or cheaper way? We pay for the line and calls etc but dont make any so the majority of bill (which is approx 60.00 per quater? i think) is made of line rental only. Her company pays for the internet connection fees.

is there any alternative as it seems a lot for nothing. Can we maybe get some sort of tv-phone package without the internet option?

Any thoughts you techies out there?

Indeed. Where do you get £60 per qtr from on a line rental of £11.25 per month?
If you want ADSL broadband then you need a landline. You can take your landline through another provider as part of a bundle, but it will only be maybe a pound a month cheaper.
If you can demonstrate to her company that the BT line is only there to provide the internet connection, then would they not pay the line rental?
The only other method is to use mobile broadband, but this may not be suitable to connect to an office server, and it will be much slower even if you can.,

It has only just gone up from £10.50. How much are you paying?
The price of £11.25 assumes direct debit and paper free billing, otherwise add £2.75.

Line rental is £11.25/month (after £1.25/month paper-free discount and if you pay by DD so as not to be hit with the £1.50/month non-DD payment method charge).

Sounds like you're paying BT £1.50/month for their F&F (Mobiles) add-on too and, clearly, don't need that. Dump it.

By my calculations, you were paying 3 x £15.50 per quarter (£46.50) not £55.50.

Knock off the £1.25, £1.50 and the other £1.50 and you'll be paying £37.50/quarter.

  • thanks heinz.

paying 15.45 per month for unlimited evening and weekend plan? and as you say f&f with mobiles add on at £1.50 per month. and payment process £ 4.50.

    15.45 * 3 46.35
    1.50 * 3 4.50
    fee 4.50
    calls 0.15

    total 55.50.

so can i cancell all the plans and ask to go dd this should bring line rental down to 37.50 per quater plus calls ( if any) is that right?

I hate dd as they will set amount wont they?

rather in my bank then theres.

If you're out of contract (and not tied into one of those 'renewable' contracts for your E&W calls plan), dump that too and revert to the (free) Unlimited Weekend Plan. As you don't make outgoing calls, that will be adequate for you (but a https://www.18185.co.uk account is still an option for you to consider).

Make sure you're on Whole Bill Direct Debit (I've just changed to the monthly version of that myself) - that means you pay what is owed, no more, no less (i.e. it's not a fixed amount) - and opt for paper-free billing.

You will pay £11.25x2 = £33.75 plus calls if you go on DD and online billing.
The DD amount will be the whole bill. As you're hardly making any calls, you know exactly what it will be each month.
The loss of interest in your bank will be more than made up by the saving in the bill (about £87 a year).
