You're not. You might be able to make a few percent difference.

It's not very difficult really.
High tyre pressure.
Anticipate, so start slowing down early for things.
Lower speeds on motorways etc.
Acceleration is not that important.

Your air con would need re-filling regardless. It has nothing to do with having it switched off. That's just the price you pay for having a car with such features.

Its called sco driving techniques, the learners have to demonstrate eco driving on test, although they are not marked (yet) down for non compliance. I get 60 mpg out of the Golf 1.9 even around town, when out on the Mways driving at around 60 mph I get 70/5. I have beem trained in the method of eco driving also I have a pushbike mainly used for urban shopping. So The price won't bother me that much;)
