My daughter is having trouble paying her student loan having recently settled in Australia. She holds no bank accounts in the UK so cannot set up a DD so it seems the only way she can pay them is by sending them cheques each month.
Surely there must be an easier way
Unless she has a UK bank account then the only alterative is to send a cheque for the whole annual amount to save bank costs and ask SLC to use the money for the whole year by offsetting.0 -
I took out a student loan between 1997 and 2000, every year since I've deferred paying it back as under the old rules I don't and never have earned enough. I'm a little worried as I havent heard from them yet about deferring for this year, should I contact them or wait for them to write to me?
You would be better to give them a call and ask when your deferment is due to end and how soon before the paperwork will be sent out.0 -
Hi
I have some questions about my mortgage student loan. It's a bit complicated, so please be patient with me.
Old-style loan - deferred for one year, forgot to defer for the next few years (I wasn't over the earnings threshold for this time) and I didn't really think any more about it.
SLC got in touch some time ago and I started repaying (despite being on benefits).
Anyway due to dire personal circumstances I was made bankrupt earlier this month.
I'm not on benefits, not working & not over the earnings threshold anyway, I have now been contacted by a debt collection company about the outstanding amount.
Any idea where I stand? Should I just contact SLC?
You should have told SLC that you were going into bankrupcy. You should give them a call as soon as possible to discuss what they can do.0 -

Contact them! If the letter has been lost in the post and you miss the deadline, they can charge fees and ask for these to be repaid immediately, even if you earn under the threshold.0 -

Thanks for the replies.
Outgoing are not taken into account; you need to be repaying the loan at the normal rate or you will run into arrears.0 -

My student loan should have been deducted for the first time this month (graduated last summer), but it wasn't. I spoke to my payroll department, who tell me they haven't received a notification to start making deductions.
Should I speak to HMRC or the SLC about this? Payroll reckon that HMRC and/or SLC don't know I'm working. It's VERY annoying, as I had to phone HMRC for something else this morning (and told them who I was working for), and was kept waiting a long time - could have done this at the same time!
Or should I leave it, see if this information filters through now it was updated this morning and they realise that I should be repaying?Excuse any mis-spelt replies, there's probably a cat sat on the keyboard0 -

You need to speak to SLC to make sure they have matched your details. If so, ask them to speak with HMRC as SLC will be able to get the start notification sent out. They will be able to advise if they need any information such as employers details.0 -
It took SLC 15 months to figure out I was working, but I didn't chase them and make them aware of it. No repercussions from it either.0
