Are repayments taken from monthly pay before or after tax and NI is deducted

Student Loan repayments are taken based on your gross salary so before tax and ni but after pension contributions as these are not taxable.

If you have any queries, ask your payroll or HR department how they are calculating the deductions.

    Thank you Mrs Manda.
The problem is that they haven't taken anything yet! What do I do now? I don't want to struggle (which is what will happen if I start paying the 9% through PAYE). I woudl have thought there is a way you can control what you pay (is , an amount that is manageable). It seems I might be better of not paying anythign at all!

You need to call the SLC if you are earning over the threshold and not paying off your Student Loan - the details are in my last post. If you don't contact them and continue not to pay I think they can demand back pay when they catch up with you. As the amount is only 9% of what you earn over £15000, unless you're earning vast amounts of money you won't have to pay much each month.
For example: earning £1650 a month means you'd pay £36 so shouldn't really break the bank.

    Hello All
apologies if my question is answered somewhere else, but I haven't been able to go thorugh all the posts.
I went to uni between 2003-2005 , thyen left my undergrad course to start a Masters (that my dad helped funding).
I started work in Dec 2006 and since then, even though I told my employer straight away (and the SLC) that I had a student loan to re-pay, nothing happened. I let it go, as I tried to get this started about three times and got fed up in the end. Now I reallty want to start paying, but if they deduct if from my salary, there is nothing left at the end of the month and I would struggle (I have very expensive counselling to pay and it is really helping me but it is expensive).
Yesterday I bit the bullet and decided to pay the first 5 pounds towards it online (!). I then decided to set up a standing order for an amount I can comfortably pay every month (in the SLC website says 'if you want to contribute an amount towards you payments or be able to control what you pay', or something like that. Am I being daft or is this a genuine option?

    Thanks for reading.

    A few questions firstly

Do you earn more than £15,000 per annum GROSS?

Does SLC have the correct national insurance number?

Does SLC have the correct employers details for you? They can check with HMRC?

Have you ever received a letter saying payments where going to start or a form requesting more information?

Check with payroll or HR to see if they have received an SL1 (Start Notification) and why this has not been actioned.
  • Hello
Do you earn more than £15,000 per annum GROSS?- YES
Does SLC have the correct national insurance number?- I ASSUME SO

Does SLC have the correct employers details for you? They can check with HMRC?- I HAVE GIVEN THEM TO SLC ABOUT THREE TIMES NOW

Have you ever received a letter saying payments where going to start or a form requesting more information?- I GOT A LETTER REQUESTING INFO WHILE DOING MY MA- I WASN'T IN EMPLOYMENT THEN AND TOLD THEM SO

The thing is, I called my employer (and emailed) and told them- they said they needed to get the SL1- I called the SLC and they said they needed to get the employer to contact them...how do I get the SL1 sent to them?

Believe me, I want ot start paying. As for 'it won't break the bank', well, it will be difficult for me as I have huge outgoings and transport to pay for to get work. It is annoying, more than anything else and I woudl like to start paying but at a rate that lets me breath.
    Thanks for the replies.

When did you finish your MA?
  • Hi Manda

September '06- started working Dec '06 so by April '07 I still hadn't reached the threshold of 15,000 pounds...I got in touch again in April '08. Nothing has changed since...
  • My daughter is having trouble paying her student loan having recently settled in Australia. She holds no bank accounts in the UK so cannot set up a DD so it seems the only way she can pay them is by sending them cheques each month.

Surely there must be an easier way

I took out a student loan between 1997 and 2000, every year since I've deferred paying it back as under the old rules I don't and never have earned enough. I'm a little worried as I havent heard from them yet about deferring for this year, should I contact them or wait for them to write to me?

    Hi
I have some questions about my mortgage student loan. It's a bit complicated, so please be patient with me.
Old-style loan - deferred for one year, forgot to defer for the next few years (I wasn't over the earnings threshold for this time) and I didn't really think any more about it.
SLC got in touch some time ago and I started repaying (despite being on benefits).
Anyway due to dire personal circumstances I was made bankrupt earlier this month.
I'm not on benefits, not working & not over the earnings threshold anyway, I have now been contacted by a debt collection company about the outstanding amount.
Any idea where I stand? Should I just contact SLC?

Your employer should have an information pack from HMRC each year regarding student loan repayments. There will be an employer helpline number where they can call for the advise.
