They don't need your signature for a refund they can do 'cardholder not present' I would infrom them of that next time you call and they should sort it out. :)

Thats not always the case , where i work although sales go through as chip/pin ,refunds do not and require a signature when i process a refund there is no option for "card holder not present".

They wait until the goods are back in stock and then refund onto your card.
(presumably they had already dispatched them before your cancelled by phone then)
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

if you bought / ordered instore returning via mail may not be an option ,just because you want to do it that way does not mean the retailer will oblige , you would have to discuss it when you made the purchase.

The only way you'll get it refunded is if you go to the store, There no way around it.

If they really will not budge on their request for you to com in store you may just have to leave it and sell the items on eBay.

Or you could enquire about a chargeback, which your bank can arrange if you paid with Visa. It's a risk as it would mean sending the items back then asking your bank to start chargeback proceedings, and even if you recieve the money in your bank, they will reserve the right to withdraw it at any time if they're not happy with the circustances of the refund.

Argos is the same, Chip and Pin for sales and signatures for refunds. We used to have (in limited circumstances) a cardholder not present method for sales and refunds on our old till system, which has just been replaced after 17 years! From store now we can't do anything with cards unless it has a signature for refunds, and no "chip and pin bypass" for cards.

The only thing you could do is accept a gift voucher/credit note and ask them to post it, or see if they will delay the refund for when you can next go back at your earliest convenience.

Chargeback probably wouldn't work as there is no instance of fraud/deception/faulty goods so Visa/MasterCard probably won't want to get involved.

Was it an independant department store? If it was a multi-branch department chain like Debenhams could you not accept the goods and then return them to your nearest store?

Your signature on any letter you send them should satisfy whatever red tape they have governing their accounts refund procedure.

if the refund procedure requires a signature a "letter" will not do .
