Finished contract

Hi,

I had a 18 months contract with O2 for my mobile and i finished on 20.08
I didnt realize so i kept my Direct Debit open as normal. my contract was 30 pounds (45 pounds contract + web bolt on discounted to 30 quid)

I got a statement today saying that i have to pay 52 pounds. well already payed on the 20th.

they did not say a word anywhere or didnt call me that my contract is due to finish, nothing at all!!
its actually quite suprinsing that nobody call me for renewal

Is that fair? can they do that?

When the 18 months is up you have the right to cancel without penalty but you have to give 30 days notice at the 17 month point , however it is up to you to cancel. You need to read the Terms and Conditions of your contract.

They aren't going to call you to tell you you are entitled to leave!

You didn't agree an 18 month contract, you agreed a contract with an 18 month minimum term. If you don't cancel, then the contract continues until you give 1 month's notice.

  • Yes i agree with that, I signed on a contract for 18 months minimum. But my question relates to the fees they are chargin me now.
My contract was 30 pounds a month not 52!! so i wanted to stay with them for couple more months on this contractand then renew it. But because they charge me 52 pounds im not gonna do that. And i wonder if that is fair can they just bump my contract price?

You need to study the bill and see how it is made up. Look at the dates covered and any chargeable calls.

No mobile company can bump up the price UNLESS there was some implied reduction for the minimum contract period.

If you are now out of the minimum term, does the discounted rate finish after 18 months? That would put it back up to £45. There must be some detail on your latest bill.

Usually, after your minimum term contract has run its course, your tariff will be changed to a standard one - without any special reductions, introductory offers etc. I believe this is stated quite clearly in terms and conditions. What's the breakdown of your bill?
  • Well if thats the case then im gonna cancel them right now!

my contract was 30 pounds (45 pounds contract + web bolt on but discounted to 30 quid). normal price would be about 52 pounds which would be allright.

can i just cancel direct debit? without calling them, why do i have to inform them if they couldnt be bothered?

to be honest i am suprised that it all turned out this way, I always had good experience with O2. I'd gladly stay with them for longer but now they really !!!!ed me off!

    thanks for replies everybody

They did inform you, it would have been in your original T&C's. It was a promo offer that has now expired.
If you just cancel your DD then you will carry on being billed-you need to give a month's notice to end your contract. Then eventually they will trash your credit record and sell the debt onto a DCA. Not really worth it if you were planing to leave anyway.
