I'm confused, I thought it would be if you positioned to receive the Astra 2/Eurobird1 group of satellites copositioned at 28° East.

It will receive some of the Freesat channels, however it can never be correctly described as a Freesat Receiver.

The box Aldi is offering will get all channels in the following link when pointed at Astra2 except a few highlighted in light green

    http://www.lyngsat.com/28east.html

Excluding Sky subscription, the follow types of satellite tv offerings for the UK can get all channels in above list in one way or another, each have there own pros/cons.

Freesat from Sky - basically a normal subscription box without a card or with a FTV/sub expired card. Some channels like Ch5 may need to be manually added if you don't have a card. The sky channel listing includes channels you won't get so can be a hassle navigating round the channels. Manually adding channels are a hassle to access as you need to go through the menus. Has Sky EPG, you could be stuck with the wrong region set for channel 1 and 3 if you don't have card.

FreeSat - based on experience with a Grundig HD Freesat box. Positives - only see channels you can get. Freesat channel listing has about 70% of the channels in the above list, all the others can be added manually. Flicking between the two channel listings (Freesat/Manual) is really simply. Has FreeSat EPG. Some models have a ethernet socket which at some point will be activated to allow connection to broadband for services like iPlayer. East postcode setup so you get the correct BBC1, ITV1 region

FTA - Allows you to manually add channels in above listing, you choose the channel number order, you can delete channels of no interest to you (ie quiz /shopping etc..). Only downsides I can see are No EPG and sometimes some of the channels on Eurobird change frequences requiring you to manually retune (Sky / Freesat boxes do this automatically), No Interative (red button/ceefax), although this maybe a plus as you can get the channels behind the interative without being pestered to press red.

If you have no intention of watching pay tv then 100% recommend a FreeSat or a FTA satellite box

you are completly wrong, a 45cm dish is more than adequate for freeview aimed at the uk, each satellite has transponders beamed at different parts of the world, the graphs you have shown are relative to ALLL transponders on the satellite situated at28.5, the transponders needed to view freeview channels will be beamed actually straight at the uk, therefore a 45cm dish is well within the size needed

Why dont people just reply when they have an understanding of the subject, it would make this great forum a lot better

Indeed it would, shame that applies to you, nobody can get " Freeview " on any satellite system.

Also none of us know how sensetive the tuner or the LNB is in the Aldi system, so none of us actually know what can be achieved.

Just to clarify, only a Freesat branded machine will get you 'Freesat'. It's about more than the channels, mainly the EPG amongst other things is specified, including the ability to exit 'Freesat' mode and just make it a free to air satellite receiver. I did have a play with this when I got my Freesat box, but really didn't find it worthwhile.

Setting up FTA mode will get you extra channels that are not currently on the FreeSat
    epg like Sky News

Yup, but I was only giving my opinion that it wasn't really worth my while going into FTA mode because I didn't see any channels that I liked that weren't available in Freesat mode. Not even the infamous LuxeHD!

I have decided not to go for this. i reckon it might be OK for a caravan/motorhome but maybe not quite what I would like for a bedroom. for £50 with a dish it looks OK compared to these http://www.freesat.co.uk/index.php?page=products.Products&type_id=2 but I suppose you get what you pay for and I'm not sure that the Aldi one is a 'true' freesat. And i don't think it is HD, at least it dosen't sat so
    Cheers for the replies.

It certainly isn't HD, nor is it true Freesat, so perhaps a wise decision.;)
