I've worked in several HR depts and sometimes as a temp and in my experience they always give HUGE emphasis on data protection etc.

girl on other end - could i speak to _________(my son)
me - er who is it??
    girl - HR at RPS
me- you are ringing his emergency contact number - its his mum here - do you want his new phone number?
(HR at his old employers btw he left in June on ill health)
girl - oh well could i discuss with you the fact that in June we overpaid him by £5..........
me - at this point i butted in and said 'you shouldnt be discussing this with me its confidential information'l
    girl- yes but....
me - let me give you his phone number and you can discuss the matter with him
    girl - but
    me - his number is________________

havent they heard about confidential information or the data protection act? and i know cos both my sons worked for them, in different jobs, their contract stated they couldnt discuss their pay!

 i would be fuming if any employers of mine had done this especially as this particular office has delayed his benefit claim by not supplying the forms benefit office has asked for until last wednesday:mad::mad::mad:

Ugh - might be worth discussing this with management there; definite "training issue" IMO.

That said, it's very rare, in my experience, to find people working in HR who're worth their salt - maybe it's a sector-wide issue, and no amount of complaining will do anything ;)

    Shoddy service there, though......
Oh come on, don't be silly.

    update
thanks all you good people for your posts!
HR manager returned from hols this week read sons email and phoned him.
profuse apologies (the experienced hr lady who was left in charge has been reprimanded and is required to attend DPA training course again) also memo being circulated about the importance of confidentiality and DPA. HR manager says sons case mis-managed from the start and he DOES NOT owe a penny!
    yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
    weight off his mind anyway.
son is happy with this - we really are NOT vengeful people - no-one wanted anyone to lose their job or anything like that! but - at same time they cant do things like that!! and if it saves anyone else from same thing its worth complaining dont you think?
  • :j Well done you!
