My last place had a dedicated server for monitoring internet usage, I changed the browsers proxy settings to avoid it and then used Firefox portable so that I left no trace at all on any PC.

The methods used by most companies are flawed to say the least, id be inclined to ask what exactly they monitor. Traffic or internet history?

Bozo, OK you have me I admit i am not a solicitor, but a mere forum contributor - you have my confession! If you don't want to believe then so be it. We do belong to the UN and are part of Europe. I'm sure an employee in your company will not physically stop you form checking their PC, even if you do it illegally. We all hide behind laws, as they protects the innocent (in an ideal world that is), you making innocent people sound guilty .

I believe if Milly did however install non-approved software then it may be a different story, but that is for a different day.

Since you are so well informed, give the girl some advice. We can all put "I would suggest that the OP gets proper legal advice" in our sig or on the page.

Strider590, you should try the tor pack portable, polipo?? portable or ultrasuf (just to name a few) - especially ultrasurf that was designed to go through those heavy regulated Chinese firewalls and is encrypted.

It is starting to look more and more underhand. You'd think if they wanted to prevent other people using Internet in works time they would want to "make an example" of you, not hush it all up.

Are you in a Union? How big is your company? Is your immediate line manager involved in this?

They did this to me with Facebook and said my profile was inappropriate, this was after the great new system crash of 2008 which saw us all work (apart from my lazy boss) 60 hours per week, each week until Christmas and into Jan. Ironically it was the least updated Facebook profile ever in that time due to me being so so busy.

I was harassed and haranged into attending training sessions and I never went, they wanted to show the new IT policy and get us all to sign, I ended up attending a special session for the planner, me and key warehouse person (basically the 3 keeping company going).

After Xmas, first day back of new year, someone reported my profile and the fact I posted a comment on someone' status at 9;30. I said it was a break and they said bit early (forgetting that smokers have a fag on the hour, every hour and that was reported a number of times).

I was threatened with a possible sacking due to unprofessional conduct (yet bizarrely wasnt suspended and allowed to deal with strategic customers, despite the allegations) then a final written, eventually being reduced to a verbal for internet usage. Totally pathetic considering that I was working my nuts off and hadnt accessed the 'net at all for 3 months.

Compare that to a member of my team i was temp looking after being reported for accessign skysports.com all day every day.. I said it was too unclear and everyone accessed the internet, which they did, everyone used it.

They said due to my reputation and job position, I should say nothing about this to anyone. I said no way and ill warn people, why should they be shafted like I had been? I was told that it would look bad on me? I refused to keep quiet and told all facebook users on site who were on my profile.

I never found out the mole from my friends list (private profile) who added me then reported me.
  • Hi, some people in my work were fired for inappropriate email and web use. However all were reinstated after tribunals. If it gets to that stage, although I don't know the law, I would find a solicitor who deals with these sort of employment issues you would probably have a decent case for reinstatement.
