Any penalties for leaving E.On price protection?

Just a quick question. We're on E.On price protection Oct 2009 (pre June 2008) tariff for Elec and Gas. There don't seem to be any exit fees, but does anyone know what discounts we will lose out on if we leave before october?

I've had a letter today saying they will switch me to Price Protection R3 (which I cannot see yet on their web site) automatically unless I say otherwise. As far as I remember the standard tariff is higher than the fix but if you want to switch products now then there is no exit fee

    Hi jd87

Depends on the actual tariff and how you pay.

We have a number of tariffs with protected prices coming to an end on 1 October 2009. Quite a few were introduced pre June 08.

If you post the actual title and version of the tariff I will be happy to let you know the amount of discount you will lose on the final bill when you change supplier. Also, whether or not you pay with a Monthly Direct Debit.

Tariff details will be on the Terms and Conditions letter we sent or on one of your bills.

Exit penalties of up to £120 or more, depending on your consumption and the weather when you switch.

    Hi Browntoa

The R3 version of our Price Protection tariff is only available to customers already on Price Protection tariffs.

As the R3 is not generally available it will not appear on our website as a switching option or the comparison websites.

Prices on the new R3 tariff are higher than our standard tariff.

You can switch products whenever you wish without being charged an exit fee.

If you are currently on Price Protection versions 13 to 17 inclusive you can also change supplier without being charged an exit fee although you will not receive discount on your final bill.

I would pop your details on a comparison site to find the best option for you. However, you will need to do a manual calculation to compare the R3 tariff.

Hope this helps but give me a shout if you need more details. Always happy to help. :)

thanks , for now I'll probably slip onto standard tariffs as I'm not happy about paying an extra £72 ish a year if prices actually drop and the "yours could too" phase that says you "may" drop the prices on R3 , the extent decided by you

    Hi Malc,

We are currently on the Price Protection 15 and phone up after received the letter to say we would be moved onto a new capped tariff from 1 October, I was told that if I moved suppliers there would be no exit fee or any change in discounts etc.

I actually asked the customer representative to confirm this several times, so based on that information we have started the change to EDF as it saves us £120 a year.

Were we given misinformation when I spoke to the customer representative as if so I need to cancel the change over until after 1 October.

    Thanks

    Hello again Browntoa

That's fine. Just remember you will automatically be put on the R3 version of Price Protection unless you tell us otherwise.

Give us a call if you want to go on to standard prices. This can be done quickly and easily over the phone.

Alternatively, you can switch tariff through our website.

    Hi reddevilled

There is no exit fee for coming off Price Protection 15 but no discount is given on final bills when changing supplier.

I am really sorry if our agent told you something different. I would suggest you call us again and ask to speak to the agent's manager as this looks like a training issue. Details of the agent you spoke to will be on your account.

Again, I apologise if you were mis-informed about discounts on final bills but hope this answers your question.

  • When I rang up to check about the loss of discount on final bill the CS lady didn't know what i was talking about - when I persisted she went away to talk to her manager and came back rather crestfallen as he/she had confirmed that no Eon customer is granted discount on the final bill. This T&C is so sneaky even 'some' Eon CS agents know nothing about it. Not a healthy state of affairs at all. Something i will be taking up with the relevant consumer bodies.

I would imagine this rakes in a lot of money for Eon over the course of a year - they are virtually guaranteed to get a 'penalty' off each and everyone of their departing customers. But not something the switching sites deem worthy enough of mentioning. Why not?

Hi Malc. On the bills it just says "Price Protection plan" and "Price Protection Gas plan". On the online summary page it says "Price Protection 1 October 2009 Electricity" and "Price Protection 1 October 2009 Gas". Does that mean we're on Version 1? Yes we pay by monthly direct debit.

If there are many Price protection tariffs then why are there only a handful to choose from on the comparison websites? on comparison sites I always choose the option that says "Price Protection Oct 2009 (Pre 26th June 08). Is that right?
