Virgin deposit for using abroad

A warning for others.

I have just gone back to virgin mobile last month (I had been a virgin mobile customer for at least 4 years maybe more before), and found out today that because my contract hasn't lasted 3 months I must pay a deposit to use phone abroad, fair enough I suppose.

Until I ring them up and ask to place a deposit and they told me it was £150!!, I then asked whether I would get this back after my trip, NO, my remaining bills will take money out of this deposit, I guess that's fine if you are paying £35+, but I am on their £8.50 contract so the deposit is more than I have left to pay on the contract. (Contract is only worth a total of £153)

I've had a look in the T&C and it says refundable deposit: £150, IMO i thought refundable meant I could get It back when I am done using the service which I am making a deposit for (In this case Using phone abroad), but instead I will not get this back completely for the best part of a year and a half.

Needless to say I will not be using Virgin Mobile again. RANT OVER.

  • I would call them back and ask them to reduce the deposit as £150 is more than what your contract is worth. If you have no joy ask to speak to a team manager. I often have customers in your situation and after a quick word in the boss's ear have been able to at least halve the deposit.
Another tip.... call before 9am and you're almost guaranteed to get through to us in the UK ;-) I find the J'burg team tend to go by the book.
