Argos Furniture and Dodgy Loo...

Options
We've just moved into our first house and we're in need of some furniture! We've got to get a couple of sofas, a dining table and chairs and a few other smaller bits and bobs. We've seen a few sofas we like, at both ends of the price spectrum but we feel like we should try and save as much money as possible. We've seen something we like in Argos that would fit perfectly but we both have reservations about not being able to actually try it - and about the general quality. Has anyone bought Argos sofas etc - can anyone give me their opinions about quality etc? For info, it's the Lucy range. El Cheapo

Second question is - the loo we have inherited has some interesting "stains" - I'm thinking that it's discoloured limescale deposits (nice!) as it's manky brown round the water line and along the sides of the pipe that runs into the U bend - what would be the best way to remove it? It's currently got quite alot of soda crystals soaking in it - has anyone got any other tips? Someone suggested rubbing it off with a pumice stone but I can't touch those things! They make my skin crawl...

Tips greatly appreciated - thanks in advance :j

  • Don't know much about Argos furniture. My mate bought a cheap "leather" sofa from there and it seems ok.

As for the loo,you can buy limescale remover which worked fine on my reclaimed loo.

Thanks Woodbutcher - any particular brands you can suggest on the limescale remover front? I had a wander round wilko the other day but couldn't see anything that looked any good. Don't want to end up buying some rubbishy stuff - I was joking to my OH that I was going to throw acid down the loo - he looked a bit worried... :D

Argos stuff is ok but for real moneysaving :money: you could try freecycle in your area - I got a great fridge freezer last night through freecycle!
use link below to find best area for you
    http://www.freecycle.org/display.php?region=United%20Kingdom

You have to offer something first and then can post for wanted.
Of course you can take up someone else's offer straight away if it suits!

I have used to get rid of old but good condition baby stuff that was cluttering my house and I think is great!

    One person's trash is another one's treasure!:D

    Good luck!

Oooo, that looks good - I'll have to investigate that. Trouble with the sofas is they've got to be EXACTLY the right size and very specific (one sofabed, one sofa!) and we can't go on much longer using my parent's garden recliner and taking it in turns for the comfy chair! We need to get something asap really - but I'll keep an eye open for other bits and pieces like our dining table etc. I'm just not very good at this money saving malarky - I'm too impatient! Naughty me :o

What's to joke about? This will do the job perfectly- get a big bottle of cheap vinegar, pour it down and let it soak overnight. If that doesn't shift it all, then do it again.

Apparently pouring a bottle of coca cola down the pan and leaving overnight works wonders, not tried it myself though. I use Harpic tablets in the bowl overnight. I can recommend these as I use them now and then when needs be.

Agree with Shelly, Harpic tablets are brill. My bathroom toilet is about 80 years & Harpic tablets are the only thing that work on it. Roll on the summer when it's all getting replaced! :j

There are a couple of cheap sofa places that are always being advertised in the back of house mags.£200 or £250 I think. Or you could try freecycle or ebay for a short term fix & save up to buy something when you've got a better idea of what you might want. My local freecycle seems to have endless amounts of sofas & sofabeds so it's worth having a look.

When I moved in with my OH about three years ago his toilet was exactly the same, completely brown under the water and lots of patchy brown stains in the basin part. I used a product from lidl, its a limescale disolver tablet that you drop in the toilet water and it fizzes up all bubbly. You leave it for a few hours and then scrub with a toilet brush to help loosen the scum. It took me a few days of doing this twice a day but in the end the loo looked brand new! I really reccomend it as you dont even have to get your hands wet (which is always a good thing ;)) You cant miss it in lidl as its the only toilet tablet they do (I think).

Caustic Soda from DIY outlets does the trick. We had a really nasty loo in a rented property and that did it. But Coca Cola works and so does harpic. With coca coal it should be left all night if possible

A word of caution, if you decide to use caustic soda. It is a very dangerous chemical and you must wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling it. I wouldn't risk handling it without rubber gloves over a long sleeved garment and eye goggles.

The Harpic tablets will be a much safer option.;)
