Would you change your job?

I could really do with some opinions of what I should do?

I currently work 30hrs over 4 days and spend just over 1 hr a day travelling. I have a permanent contract and work flexi time so can come and go pretty much as I please over the 4 days I work. I usually end up being out of the house from around 7.30am to 6pm.

I have the possibility of a new job which is full time (9 to 5) but only 5 mins down the road from my home so I would end up being out of the house for about 3 hours more per week but could pop home at lunch times. The job is great and would look great on my CV and open lot of doors long term. Although the same money as I’m on now (or pro rata equivalent) is only a 3 year contract.

My main concerns are
* I have an 18 month old and want to spend as much time with him as possible (giving up work altogether unfortunately is not an option), childcare is sorted for either.
* I am think of trying for another baby in the near future (next year or 2 but may not be straight forward)

I would jump at the new job if it wasn't for the tempoary contract, but what if I get pregnant towards the end? I could end up jobless, or if I don't have another baby I may not be able to find as good a job as I now have and end up in a worse position.

What would you do in my position? stay put where I am and it’s safe or go for the new job?

Thanks everyone

Ria what are the chances of a permanant positon becoming available whilst in the new job. The place i work regulary takes on temporary staff and the majority have all been taken on perm after about a yr bar a couple of completely useless ones?

Its hard to say. Its a EU funded contract so in the current climate could go either way.

Its hard as if it wasn't for family issues i wouldn't think twice. Trials of motherhood I guess!!

3 year contract is pretty good going in this climate. I know a Uni lecturer who has to re-apply for his job every 3 months.

3 years... I think i have only held 1 job for 3 years :) Always been employed but never stayed that long in any of the jobs...
I'd go for it personally :)

  • I would go for it too... a three year contract is brilliant and to me that says they are expecting it to be permanent, even if the funding for the project stops you are very likely to be able to be redeployed in the organisation.

I took my current job as 18 hours per week for a 18 month contract. I now work full time and have been permanent since about 3 months in. Have been there for five years now.

Best of luck with what ever you decide, but if you took a job that was called permanent tomorrow there are no more quarantees...

One thing to consider is the maternity package with the new job. If, fingers crossed, it did become permanent then would you be better off in the long term???. From your post it sounds like your current job is in the civil service (I may be completely wrong but from the hours and flexi conditions you have it sounds v much like mine). If so then I would stay with it. Not many other employers in the private sector are as considerate to work/family balance.

Good luck with whichever you decide.

If you're planning another baby then I'd probably think of sticking with the current job. Being able to have flexi time must be a real boon if you have child care issues of one type or another. Being down the road wd be great in an emergency though too.
I don't know how maternity pay works if you're on a contract, that would be worth investigating.
  • You won't get a job 5 minutes away again. And you won't get the toddler years back again, either. I'd take the risk and go with the new job. You wouldn't want to be stuck miles away if your little one falls over and breaks their wrist. And, there's no guarantee you will have another child - don't give up a chance to be close for the one you already have on the offchance you might have another one in a couple of years.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

I've had EU funded jobs - I wouldn't rely on it.
