New fence wrong way round?

Hi we've just had a new fence built at our new house. They asked me if I wanted the smooth boards showing or the struts as its a boarded fence. I said smooth. When OH came home he went mad and said its the wrong way round! For security reasons the "nice side should be on the outside so people cant get a leg up on the struts and also from that side they could now kick the boards in. I never thought of that and now wonder if there is a right and wrong side should they not have just put it up the "right" way? It also backs onto council owned land so should they not get the "nice" side? They need to come back anyway cos its on the skew as they didnt level the ground. Thanks for any views on this.

You shouldn't have been given a choice.Definitely the wrong way round,sorry.0

It can be anyway round u like it ,its just people put them round with the struts inside for the reason your husband gave that its harder for someone to climb but if kids are going to climb it they will anyway no matter what way you have it0

Have to disagree.Putting the fence that way round totally negates the main reason for having it,which is security.Boards can be kicked in easily.0

I agree but if someones that intent on kicking a fence in or climbing it they will do it regardless0

Yeah sorry, lost sight of the original post and it's not a disaster to have the fence that way round. It certainly is better from an aesthetic viewpoint.Live with it a while and see if you have any problems before worrying unduly.I'm sure it will be fine.0

People used to think it polite to their neighbours to give their neighbours the smooth side. Then people decided that as they were paying they wanted the smooth side.
When you get really old fences and arguements as to who should replace, people often claim that the side with the struts are responsible for it.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
