underlay_guru wrote: »Hi,
Let me know of the exact sizes of the rooms in cm's, and I shall work out how many rolls of underlay you will need! Its the least I can do for the late reply:o
room 1 - 402 cm x 246cm
room 2 - 462 cm x 342cm
room 3 - 343 cm x 335cm
the carpert shop said that for room 1, if we could get away witha join it would be cheaper for us, these measurements are including a wardrobes aswell which we are going to carpet aswell and the join will be behind a door so it wont be toobad for us.
thanks once again.Listen to what people say, but watch what people what people do!!0 -
Hi,
based on your measurements (approx 37.20 square metres) you will need 2 and a half rolls of Cloud 9 underlay (Which will be 37.50 square metres).
Most webshops only sell either full rolls or by the square metre (which works out more expensive), but there are one or two that will supply half rolls too. Google 'cirrus half rolls' and you will find the shops that do!
Regarding joins: I think the retailer was referring to the carpet. the underlay is simply laid in strips and joined together with cloth tape, which keeps waste to an absolute minimum.Profit=sanity

after looking on the net this shop seems to be the cheapest (not all sell it by half a roll)
half roll £20.34
full roll £34.30

No matter what quality of carpet you buy. if it`s Beige you have bought yourself a problem. We purchased a top quality £50 per sq Mtr Ulster 80/but beige carpet. We looked after it by placing a plastic runner from the front door to the rear room door. After a while we took it up to reveal a clean new carpet where that had been lay but the rest was filthy. It drew a straight line where the runner had been so I hired a Vax and cleaned that area. Same thing happened again after a few months so I cleaned it again. As a result, the vax, or myself had put too much water onto the carpet that the Vax could not suck up resulting in the underlay going mouldy then showing through the carpet a few months later. I have tried claiming from my insurance but the damage was done months ago. Maybe if I told a lie and said i had splilled water on it, they would have come out and maybe replaced it. Anyhow, if your to buy a Beige carpet, make sure its a cheap one.0

hi underlay_guru calling on your help again regarding this, finally decorated the hallway so will attempt to put the underlay down next week in my daughters rooms in readiness for the carpet to be fitted next friday. With the room sizes i have
room 1 - 402 cm x 246cm
room 2 - 462 cm x 342cm
room 3 - 343 cm x 335cm
would you tackle the largest room first and work your way lengthways down the room to make as much use of the underlay rather than having any waste.

Hi,
Again, for these three rooms you are going to require approx 37.20 square metres of underlay. Most domestic carpet underlay rolls are sold in 15 square metre rolls (or 11 metres x 1.37 metres) meaning you will need to buy 3 rolls, or some of the online underlay shops sell half rolls should you need it. Check the square metrage of the rolls before you buy, but the majority of underlays are 15m2...
To absolutely minimise waste to a minimum in room 1, lay the underlay widthways across the shorter wall of the first room. By doing this there should only be a thin 9cm x 2.46m of waste!
There is no 'super economical' way to minimise waste to rooms 2 and 3, but use the waste from one room to fit another. Remember that the underlay is not visible underneath the carpet, so if you run short, pieces can 'jigsawed' together.
If you have not fitted underlay yourself before, it is not a doddle, but it is not exactly difficult either.
Roll out the product and lay it from gripper to gripper. Ensure the product is laid correct side up! (In most cases, the correct side up is the side with brown paper, or with a logo printed on it).
Perimeter stick the underlay to the floor with a dual sided tape or a spray adhesive.
Join the underlay pieces with a stong cloth tape. Don't use a plasticy parcel tape... this will cause a crinkly crisp-packet sound underfoot!Profit=sanity
