  • If you have time I would suggest getting a quote from more than one shop. When I bought my house I had a quote for all the bedrooms, stairs and landing. My first choice of local shop quoted me £1500+ so I got another quote from a shop a few miles away and payed £600ish for very similar carpet......both small independent shops.

You need to be careful with cheap quotes because the sample that they show you is not necessarily the carpet you will have fitted.

Hmm not a great help but we have carpet on our stairs and halls and they are cream, lovely but not ideal but all we could afford at the time and liked as quite limited for choice. We chose a very hard wearing one and i have to say the majority of the house is fine and like new considering the colour but the say 3 bottom stairs are a bit grubby as get a lot of wear and tear. It was around £10 per square meter off the top of my head so im not sure you need to spend loads but of course it depends what you want. Quiz them our men were fab and did a really good job for a good price.
    Good luck

Don't buy your underlay/grippers/door strips from the shop as their mark up is tremendous, get them off the internet instead. We got good quality Cloud 9 Cirrus (9mm) underlay which worked out at £2.28 + VAT per sq.m. when you buy full rolls. Our fitter supplied the gripper and door strips at a nominal cost but you can get these for around £20 + VAT for 500 ft of gripper off the internet.

    .

hi can i ask where you bought the underlay from online, we are buying some carpet for our daughters bedrooms and it already in the room but the fitter said that it wears and its probably best to changed it. he wanted to supply underlay but it didnt look much better quality *thickness than the one thats already down.

No problem Stolt, here you go . Buying by the roll at £2.26 + VAT per sq.m. is cheaper if it works out right for you, buying by the sq.m. is £2.55 + VAT. We overestimated (well OH did ) and had 1.5 rolls left so it would have been better to buy 4 rolls plus a few sq.m. than the 6 rolls he ordered.

Our fitter said Carpenter 8mm underlay is just as good but we'd already bought the Cirrus so didn't look into the price of the Carpenter.

thanks for that, will check out the websie, i googled the cloud 9 stuff and found another forum that mentioned this website http://www.tradepriced.co.uk/cloud_9_carpet_underlay.html, they were all reccomending the 11mm.

Will the 9mm be ok for our daughters room, would like to feel soft and spongy!!

Our fitter said that 11mm is too thick, the carpet is more difficult to fix onto the gripper with underlay that thick. The 9mm feels lovely and luxurious underfoot.

If Underlay-Guru is around, perhaps he can comment but he's not been on any threads lately so maybe he's on holiday.

    Hi,

Sorry, I have been on holiday for 2 weeks and only got back on Saturday morning (If you ever plan a trip to Las Vegas, get ready to BLEED money....I stupidly paid a collosal $32 for 2 Jack Daniels and cokes, and the barmaid took a major huff when I wouldn't tip her !!!)....forgive me if there are any spelling mistaiks as im still terribly jetlagged!

It appears you may have been given sound advice in my absence: buy all of your ancilliaries (grippers, door metals, underlay) from an online shop, as you will undoubtedly save £££'s. Regarding the underlay, Cloud 9 is what I would recommend if I had a completely clueless customer on the phone. Why? It is a lightweight, consistent, UK manufactured product, and I have had not one single complaint on it since I have started to sell it. The 11mm Cumulus is the daddy of domestic underlays IMO and offers supreme bouncyness under your carpet. The main downside to it, however, is the fact you may haver to use a specialist long-pinned gripper (Becase of its thickness, a thicker carpet may 'unpin' itself from regular medium pinned gripper). The undersides of your doors may also need to be shaved. For a bedroom you would be fine with the Cirrus 9mm: It may be thinner, but still offers a brilliant softness underfoot...

Someone also mentioned that a retailer told them that 'Carpenters 8mm' was just as good: Rubbish. Just because they look the same, doent mean they perfoem the same:

Here are the main differences: 8mm 'Carpenters Greenstep' has a less dense foam than Cloud 9. the sample will feel softer, but it will flatten quicker.

Cloud 9 products have a stitched paper top to them, which not only helps the product stay rigid and firm under the carpet, but prevents it from stretching like a rubber band. Carpenters 8mm underlay is topped with polythene film, meaning it is less rigid, and will stretch when it is being laid: leading to possible damage.

Carpenters 8mm is £'s cheaper for the trade to buy than Cloud 9. If you are being offered it at the same price or only pennies cheaper: forget it!

I think Im too late in offering carpet advice, but for a bedroom, I would never buy the most expensive. If your daughter is a mucky pup, I would recommend a polypropylene carpet with a dense pile (expect to pay £7-12 per square metre for one of these) These are great beacause they can be scrubbed to kingdom come with neat bleach, plus the density of the pile ensures it does not flatten prematurely.

Ive mentioned this a million times on MSE: No matter how much a salesman harps on that wool is the best.... It is the density of the pile (How close the tufts are to each other) which determines how long a carpet will last, NOT the material of manufacture. A cheap wool carpet will not last longer than an equally dense man-made equivalent, and vise versa!!!!

I did pick up your PM this morning, but again, Im probably too late with this advice. Next year I'll snub Vegas and head for Skegness!!!

thanks fr underlay_guru for the informative post. I think i'll get all three of my daughters rooms kitted out with the cloud 9 underlay and put that down before they fit the carpet.

I've measure the rooms in cm's just got to work out how much i need in metres now.

    thanks

  • Hi,

Let me know of the exact sizes of the rooms in cm's, and I shall work out how many rolls of underlay you will need! Its the least I can do for the late reply:o
