HPI Check help

My mother has recently bought herself a car and then done a HPI Check..............AFTERWARDS!
It shows as a cat D write off, but thats not we are worried about as the car has been checked and has been repaired to a high standard and is structurarly sound.
The worrying part is that it is recorded as a theft with insurance companies.
Am I right in thinking that at some point it has been stolen, insurance company has paid out but when the car was recovered it was never given to the insurers who now legally own it.
The cat D write off occurred two years after the theft, so if it legally belonged to an insurance company surely this will have flagged when they made the claim for the cat D damage.
Anyone help me on this?!

CAT D isnt really anything to worry about tbh. if its stolen recovered then it will of been missing until the insurers paid out ! then it was found so belongs to the insurer.. along comes mr salvage yard who "buys" the car from the insurer and sells on.
or the origonal owner of the car has bought it back off the insurer.
what was the car anyway ??Sealed pot challenger # 10

Its a Peugeot 206.
Its still showing as insurance theft though which means an insurance company still has an interest in it.
My mums insurers are looking ti up but its been over a week now and not heard anything.0 -
If she bought the car from a trader or dealer then you can get your money back.
If a private sale not much you can do.
Repaired well or not, a cat D rating cuts the value of the car in half compared to a similar model and year.
Providing she paid half the price of a similar non cat d car and the repair was good she may be ok.
Otherwise she will lose a lot of money when the time comes for disposal or sale.0 -

When you say it is "still showing as insurance theft" do you mean that the record of a Cat D is still there, or that there is a warning notice on the vehicle re the theft (eg contact *** police)? If the former, that will always be there - that's the point of the register. If the latter, it could just be that it's not been removed, in error.0 -
No there is an insurance theft registered in 2005 then a cat D in 2007. Two seperate claims
The theft from 2005 is still showing as having an insurance itnerest though.
If it was legally owned by an insurance company though I dont see how another insurance company will have paid out for another write off 2 years later as this will have flagged on the insurance database.0 -
I think thefts just stay on regarrdless? I know I took something in PX a while back that had been nicked a few years ago, but the people got the car back and got a new key.0

Plot thickens.
The insurers Direct Line cant or wont check if any other insurance company has a claim to it.
Now they have also found it was previously a Cat D write off they will no longer insure it.
After a few phone calls it has become obvious that we are going to find anyone to insure the car. Any suggestions?0 -
most insurers will cover a cat c/cat d write off but with an engineers report to say its roadworthy etc
when my 106 was damaged my insurer said they would continue to cover it if i got a new mot on it and forwarded a copy to them althought they did say if i didnt get the damage reapaired they wouldnt pay out on the car if needed in the future
this was a non fault accident btw
it was declared in the end as a cat bSealed pot challenger # 10

Hmmmm. Well direct line seem adament they cant cover it.
Done a bit of reading on the internet and it states that engineers reports aren't needed for Cat D's?
Still not sure what to make of it all as the insurance company, DVLA, HPI or anyonew still cant confirm if another insurance company has an interest in the vehicle.0
