What about the old trusty leave a tub of bicarb in it to absorb pongs. I have also heard of people using cat litter (clean!!) and newspapers scrunched up. All of these are supposed to remove smells.

Then maybe after that a squirt of homemade febreeze, fabric conditioner third and two thirds water. Or what about fabric conditioner sheets for the tumble drier.

  • I wonder if a bowl of white vinegar will help. It absorbs paint and vomit smells. Just put it in and shut the door.

  • Or a few drops of lime juice in a bowl of very hot water, put it in and close the door. (This gets rid of food smells but it might not work on mustyness.)

  • Thanks for all the suggestions. Am going to try the newspaper trick first (cos they're free) and see if that works.
  • I put the newspaper in this morning but how long should I leave it there.

Renew the newspaper every day for a few days till the smell is gone. I had to keep doing that every day for 2 weeks with a small chest of drawers I inherited. But it works and is the cheapest way of clearing the smell.:T
  • I tried newspaper but it doesn't seem to have made a significant difference so am thinking of trying bicarb next. What would be the best way of doing this? Should I just put a little tub in or would it be better to sprinkle it in and then vacuum it out?
  • If the smell is persistent you need to try more serious measures. A scrub or wipe down with a bleach solution or sodium bicarb all over the inside bits (taking care it doesn't damage any finishes) should work. If that fails you could try lightly sanding it and varnishing/painting the inside (varnish and paint are great at killing off mildew and sealing up odours), or oiling/waxing it with furniture polish. Musty smells shouldn't persist unless the item is kept in damp conditions. As a last ditch resort you can hire an ozone machine which is used to remove very strong smells but this is costly.

    Hello,

we've just moved house and noticed that some of the kitchen cupboards smell musty. I've wiped them all out with an ecover spray, but the mugs and glasses we keep in there smell musty when they come out.

Any suggestions as what needs to be done?

    THANKS!
