If you know any builders you could also ask them. My first kitchen was one that was being ripped out & replaced. It was brilliant for my first house & came with a fridge as well. All free as the old owners just wanted rid of it.

Our washing machine was from someone who wanted a new "coloured" one.

We have a very strong deposit, and also have an agreement in principal from the bank. All good on that front.

My question - as first time buyers, where do the funds come from to furnish your house and also to decorate it to your tastes? Is this something the bank will advise you would need to take away from your deposit or other savings? Or will the bank allow you to add something on top of the purchase price of the house and therefore allow you to borrow a bit more on your mortgage for this?

We forgot to ask this when we met with the mortgage advisor at the bank, and it seems such a silly thing to ask too!
Forgive me if I am reading this the wrong way, but are you putting all of your savings into the deposit (and other up-front costs - stamp duty, legal fees, etc)?

Do you have any money left over for emergencies when the boiler breaks or the roof starts leaking?

    thats the same thing

Sorry but I don't see how? If it come from our savings/deposit, it's paid for in one go, if the cost of the furniture is added to the mortgage, then it gets paid for over 25 years? Not the same? I even asked MrMcLaren if I was being dumb here, but we both agree that it's not the same.

We haven't put all of our savings in the deposit, no :) We do have a seperate savings account for the aforementioned emergencies.

I guess my original question should've been better worded, as I wasn't really asking should we buy new or secondhand. I was asking where people who do not choose to get everything for free would take the funds from, and it seems of course more sensible to take it from savings rather than add on to mortgage. This was something that MrM and myself had different concepts on, as being first time buyers it's not something that we've though about too much before actually starting to hunt for a place to buy.

Thanks for all the answers! :D

I was thinking if you used the deposit, you have to add that much to the mortgage to balance it out.

When we moved into our first flat (rented and unfurnished), we had the same problem. Neither of us at that time earnt huge amounts so buying new was not a consideration.

Our sofa came from a friend..huge 8ft long thing that he tied on top of his mini, what a sight that was!

Our bed and wardrobes came from OH's nan, already a fair few years and it took us over 10 years to replace the bed (might have been nearer 15), the wardrobes are still in use nearly 22 years later.

Table was donated by someone else, another chair donated by another, cooker was already there (but pretty carp).

Washing machine cost us £15 second hand, tumble dryer was being thrown out by someone and we knocked on the door and asked if it was still usable..it was and it lasted us years (on only my second tumble dryer since 1988).

Sheets, quilts, quilt covers etc we had from our engagement party.

The only new thing we got was our fridge with a tiny freezer compartment.

It was rather higgledy piggledy but it was home.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

You do get some good things on Freecycle so I disagree with whoever said people would rather sell the good stuff on Ebay.
We have got a double bed frame and mattress, a TV, a solid pine wardrobe (which is beautiful!) all from freecycle. We got our first washing machine from a family members neighbour although we have had to replace this with new. We got our sofa & chair from a nearby place which sells things cheaper for people who get certain benefits, for only £99 which was a bargain as they are really nice. Our table and chairs were given from my Gran, tumble dryer from a family friend, laminate flooring and cooker from my parents, carpets from my Aunt, I could go on all day lool.
Most of the smaller things I collected for years before I even had a house. Every Xmas I would be given house items along with the better presents, boring at the time but was a great help once we got our house! I really do reccommend people buy things for themselves/their kids for when they have their own place, it makes it so much easier. Only things we have brand new are fridge freezer and washing machine. So Freecycle can be a good choice, so can asking family/friends. :o
