Affordable places which I can recommend are Bromley, Beckenham, Croydon, Chislehurst - all about 30 minutes by train to London Bridge.0

Depends on what your after for your money... south woodford, wanstead are lovely places. East London/Essex area, 25 minutes on central line to the city. £250k will buy you a 2 bed flat! Real mix of houses, cheapest 350k - most expensive £1m+Friend Debt: 5,000/3,850
2013 Start Mortgage: 306,585/306,585
Overpayments: 0
ISA Saver: £100 -
What about Chelmsford? Yes, I know it's nowhere near the outskirts of London but you can get a frequent trains into Liverpool St in around 35 mins or so. Was also in the 10 ten places to live in the UK in a Channel 4 programme a little while ago.0

Goodymp,
You're right in some ways about Bromley, Croydon and Beckenham, they do have some wonderful value for money properties and are not far from Central London. But they also have some of the most expensive properties in the country.
The thing with London and the outskirts is that one part of an area can be run down, and the next road can be exclusive with hugely expensive properties. Even Brockley has some very expensive properties.
Personally I would draw a circle around the edge of London and look for places there. You can still get into the centre pretty quickly but have the benefit of leafy and green roads compared to urban sprawls, and you get more for your money too.
For South London I'd go for South Croydon or Purley (both very green with some lovely houses to die for) and good value, or for North London I'd go more towards Southgate area; again very green, some beautiful houses, great connections to Central London and the best of both worlds really.0 -
Thanks everyone. You've all given me some gret ideas.
Definitely looking for a house.
SheppyD,
Have you got any pictures?0 -
Personally I would avoid anything that goes through London Bridge if I wanted a short commute. Far too much of a bottleneck.0
