Hi
RE- ROUTERS
I bought a router about three months ago, so beware what you get. DEFINATELY dont buy one on ebay ( ebays great but not for these). I had problems with the first I bought from pc world and had to take it back- with ebay you would be stuck with it.
My advice is to buy the router from whoever you get your internet service. As routers are very hard to set up ( i still have nightmares! ) and you will need back up advice. Plus you need the correct configirations for it -so if you buy it from your internet provider it will make things easier as they should know it. It is dearer but it saves so much hassle it is definately worth it.
I made a big mistake by buying a bt router for bt yahoo broadband and no one could help configure it. Cost me a fortune in phone calls and untold stress. Sorry to be the sound of doom but I would hate for you to make a mistake.Old Faithful we roam the range together,

Take a good look at ADSL Guide http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/
They have a wealth of advice available, even if you are a newbie.
Would definately get a modem/router as they provide you with an extra layer of security. Try to get one with firewall buit in.
I use an Origo which was easy to set up, even the wireless bit, and they have a dedicated web site to help you http://adsltech.com/portal/forum/forum_topics.asp?FID=9&PN=1I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0 -
I can't thank you all enough for the valuable information, thank goodness I had the good sense to ask for help otherwise I would have wasted a lot of money, of that I am certain.
I can see the sense of buying a modem included in the package, but they don't sem to offer the choice of upgrading to a router. Pepemia............ your experience gives me nightmares, lol! thank goodess you warned me about Ebay as I was about to trot off and buy one from there!
I still have to decide which ISP I will choose, maybe there will be some new fantastic offer in the NewYear :P
Happy New Year to you allWhen man sacrifices the Love of POWER for the Power of Love, there will be peace on earth.0 -
My Corega router worked pretty much out of the box - the instructions were clear.
As for modems, they should mostly plug and play !
Ebay is fine for buying stuff so long as you know what you want to buy. Routers do not become a problem just because they have come from ebay. You pay your money and take your choice.
I personally would not take the one from the isp as they tend to be massively over-priced. Some of them will tell you the modem they supply and then you could search for it elsewhere and save yourself £20 or so.

The ZyXEL Prestige 650H-E router is an ideal solution for SOHO users who require super-fast Internet access, or LAN-to-LAN connections over existing copper wires with the option to add wireless capabilities. The ZyXEL Prestige 650H-E router is an ADSL-based router, provides maximum speeds of up to 8Mbps for up to 4 computers without the extra cost of a hub or switch.
An Instant LAN with an Integrated 4 port 10/100Mbps Switch
The combination of a switch and router makes the ZyXEL Prestige 650H-E router is more efficient and less expensive than having to purchase separate boxes. The built-in switch provides each connection a dedicated 10/100 Mbps bandwidth that greatly increases the throughput for bandwidth-sensitive applications as opposed to having to use a hub where the bandwidth would be inefficiently shared by all of the stations. The industry-standard HP Auto MDI/MDIX feature enables the on-chip transceivers to automatically and transparently detect and correct incorrectly wired cables. This makes installation, debugging, and maintenance of the network substantially simpler and less expensive for the end users.
Powerful Multi-to-Multi NAT and Routing Features for Internet Access Sharing
The multimedia-aware NAT (Network Address Translation) feature not only allows an unlimited number of users to access the Internet with a single ISP account, but it also supports multimedia applications such as NetMeeting, CUSeeMe, IRC, RealPlayer and ICQ. With PPP routing and robust security features, the ZyXEL Prestige 650H-E router connects your computers to the Internet while protecting your local network.
Ease of Use and Management
The Web-based Graphical User Interface (GUI) allows easy installation of the ZyXEL Prestige 650H-E router and effortless management, either locally or remotely. With the built-in DHCP server, which automatically assigns and configures IP parameters to the computers on your LAN, Internet connections become truly plug-and-play.
This router is also available for use on ISDN and ISDN U-R2, please phone for more info.

I know talk talk have a router which is very good ( dsl speedtouch) and they give you the back up installation for it. Also Bt do routers too if you phone and ask just make sure your not connected to bt yahoo broadaband but !! Bt yahoo seem a bit dear for their broadband - im with bt yahoo and their service is trash. Most big internet providers do offer routers at the extra price ( in fact CPW talk talk were the cheapest price for their DSL router) and if you ask them to recommended one they can be quite helpful.
I dont particulary like Bt but the good thing about buying a router from them is that they SEND you a bill seperately so you get it intereast free for about three months !! plus you can send it back within 14 days if you cant get it installed ok.
Wanadoo also have advice on their site for router connection ( i looked under gaming).
You can get loads of cheap routers but they are no use unless they are easily configured or set up for your system. Unfortunately you dont really know this to you try - unless you manage to get a good recommendation from someone. Hopefully someone will be able to help with that one !

PS .I have some 2 spare adsl modems. If you are only using one connection I am sure a modem will be all you need. Routers are really best for sharing computers or gaming. Most internet providers will give you one as standard but if they dont email me and I will post you one.You can only but try it and see.

Hi Pepemia
Gosh you are so kind taking all that trouble to type out all that information! also for offering me the modem
good gracious that really made my day such kindness.
Please let me know how much you want for it and how much the postage would be and I will send you a cheque. Yes, the connection is only for me, and it would be a great way of trying it out without laying out too much money. Got to look after the pennies unfortunately when you get older :-[
Hope you have a lovely evening, and Happy New Year to youWhen man sacrifices the Love of POWER for the Power of Love, there will be peace on earth.0
