How to pay in cheque payable to me to my dad's bank account

hi, I do not have a bank account, and am currently unable to get one, however, i have a cheque for £5800 that I need to cash.
I signed the back, and gave it to my dad to deposit into his bank (HSBC), which he went to the hsbc branch and put it in the drop box, and the next day the cheque is returned in the mail with the message "We are not able to accept this cheque into your account as it is not payable to yourself".

Now, I share the same surname as my dad, obviously, and I signed the back, so this was unexpected.

My dad suggested taking the cheque to Natwest (from where it is drawn), but i'm not sure if you can deposit cheques other than at the bank you are banking with?

Also is there anything I can do? I cannot realistically open a bank account of my own for another 2 months, and really need this money ASAP.

thanks for help guys..

  • Return the cheque to the person who gave it to you, and ask them to re-issue in your dad's name

You could take to one of those shops where they cash cheques but they charge loads of money... can't think of any other option as banks usually only accept cheques in the name of the account holder .

:(( i am quite scared now that I'm not going to be able to use this money and its lost :<<...
arg. i doubt one of those cheque casher places would accept a cheque of over £5k... due to the risks of cheque bouncing i'd have thought.

    oh man :(
  • I cashed a cheque once in my account with my mum's name on it, same surname (she knew about it! ;)) so some banks will do it.

Can you not open a savings account and pay it into there?

  • Why can you not have a basic bank account?

Even bankrupts can have a basic bank account.

Or do you not have a savings account? Can you not go to a bank and open one and pay it into there?
Wow, I got 3 *, when did that happen :j:T:p

it's impossible to get a bank account if you have a CIFAS marker on your credit report, which I do.. and expires in 1-2 months, so until then i' cannot have a bank account

Now, I share the same surname as my dad, obviously, and I signed the back, so this was unexpected.

Cheques crossed for the account payee cannot be endorsed to another party, this puts an end to cheque conversion fraud. This has been the law for many years.

Cheques crossed for the account payee must be paid between the two parties there to (i.e. drawer pays beneficiary) unless a special arrangement exists. Natwest won't cash the cheque for you, and I'd be surprised if they'd allow you to credit another bank's account through their bulk clearing (you'd need a credit slip for your dad's account, too). Even if they did, you could expect them to be more scrupulous due to the amount and circumstance.
I cashed a cheque once in my account with my mum's name on it, same surname (she knew about it! ;)) so some banks will do it.

Some banks should not do it, as they stand to lose the funds if the cheque were ever disputed by the drawer. It happens a lot for smaller cheques, but £5800 is a little too much.

We don't refuse, we just typically require additional information to be provided as part of the application.

We certainly don't close accounts because a CIFAS marker is applied, either.

I don't think you're screwed, just ask to appeal applications at the banks or consider something like the Post Office account etc.
