A minimum call charge of 4p does apply on Primus.

Does that apply even to the free evening & weekend calls?

    No.nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Just as i thought i'd got my orchid dialler set up !

    This are my 'dialling rules':
01/02 Geographic off peak -'primus' (CPS)
    01/02 Geographic numbers peak. 1899.
    Landline to mobile. 18185
0844/0871 BT at all times (1280 to bypass CPS).
    0845 Peak. (dialaround) 0844 462 68 68
    0870 Peak 18185
0845/0870 Evenings and Weekends BT (1280 to bypass CPS).
    Directory Enquiries 0800 0192 190 (when dialing 118 XXX or 192)
    international landline and mobile 18866

Can anyone please tell me what calls i need to route back to BT (1280) for the cheapest option ?

    thanks

The quickest way to answer that question is to refer you to the MSE UK Callchecker (but you appear to have spotted the obvious of routing most of your 084/7 calls that way - except 0870 calls between 0600 & 1800 Monday to Friday [which, via 18185, are almost half price]).

However, your 2p/minute route for peak 0845 calls, saving 50% on BT's 3p/minute rate, may be worthwhile (I consider it too much hassle with the certainty of being charged BT's 5.5p minimum call charge even if my 'target' number is engaged, the decider).

Thanks for the reply heinz, so all i need to alter is the 0845 peak call via dialaround, and add 1280 to the dialaround number to route via BT ?

    thanks

That (i.e. 128008444629191) may already be one of the drop down options in CW Client.

On weekends Primus is cheaper for 0870/0871 calls as it is only 2p/minute as mentioned by heinz in his post.

I've paid 4p/min too for 0844 no.'s, in 3 months it's £120 instead of £30! BT claims that 0844 is a variable rate, unlike 0845 or 0870, so it can cost more or less then 4p/min. BT says that any supplier should charge the agreed price (which is pre-recorded on every 0844 call). Primus won't agree. Can anyone advise me who is correct here, I think primus is just using a loophole to make more money. I've moved to tiscalli, they send itemised bills every month, and are good customer services (there is an 0800 no. to call them too!) So now it's £8.99/month for 24hrs free calls, and no tricks up the sleeve.

Don't be fooled, those 'free' calls (they're not free BTW - you're actually pre-paying £8.99 per month for them even if you're away on holiday and don't make any calls) are only to UK 01/02 numbers!

There are numerous different 0844 rates (that's how the dial-through companies shown in the MSE Callcheckers provide differently priced routes to different destinations) and, on BT, they vary, depending upon the 5th, 6th and 7th digits, between ½p per minute and 5p per minute.

Other providers can and do charge different rates but BT's prices are HERE.
