They are all much of a muchness. I prefer the Garmin models. I have found their customer service to be excellent, and the products to be very reliable. I have yet to find a model that doesn't offer routing to avoid motorways, toll roads and u-turns.

Ebuyer have navigo units for £50ish

They are capable of running TOM TOM software with a bit of tweaking. (the unit is shipped with turbodog which is a bit pants IMHO)

  • Garmin and don't worry about it, very useful you will not go out without it!

Another feature you may not realise is that after dark its more like a radar showing the road ahead.
  • I use a tom tom and it sometimes takes me on strange routes, but 9/10 times it chooses the quickest routes. Never used a garmin so it may be better

I'm in a similar position to the OP and want to buy my first satnav (having travelled 10 miles in the wrong direction on a motorway today :o ). Have decided on Garmin but no idea which model to go for. I want something very simple and intuitive to use with traffic updates and speed warnings to ensure I do not inadvertently go over the limit. Any advice gratefully received!

I have the nuvi 265. Not the cheapest model but does almost everything, including pairing with my phone as a hands free kit. Also has European maps. In retrospect, I would have paid a bit more and got the model with lane advice and FM.
