Are you aware the Felix you just asked a question about is a Nestle company which owns 50% of L'Oreal?

No i wasn't so i apologise - have just been looking at articles linked to this thread and will be changing my cat to naturediet which is what i feed my dogs. My supplier also stocks Pero dry food so will look at that too.

    For anyone who has had to take a cut back in the quality of dog food they normally get;

2.5kg sacks of Wagg are on offer for 97p in Wilkinsons while stocks last. It's not the best but your dog will be fine until you are able to go back to your usual good quality food :)

  • Hi, just on the link that Sunnyday posted on 26/1, I know IAMS tested on animals learnt that through here

Noticed it also says Hills Science Plan, does anyone know if the Hills Prescription Diet is tested on animals? My dogs on that at the minute recommended by the vet and it costs a fortune

Yes they do, sadly. They're owned by Colgate Palmolive co who do the testing. It's pretty hard to find a company these days who don't.

Good dog food to buy (who don't test) are arden grange.

Here's an extensive list of who to boycott. P&G being the main culprit.

Reading through the link not all the brands are boycotted because of animal testing but it's a good informative read :) Some... are a bit crazy though!

    Hi,
is the prescription diet your doggie is on dry or wet?

If you could post the ingredients and why your dog is on the diet its possible that an alternative could be found.

I know that vets often push the hills range as they make money on it but if its just a case of a weight problem or something equally as simple there will probably be a good alternative.

    Hi Sunnyday.

He is on J/D reduced calorie as he has hip displascia (sp) and he was on a diet to try and help him loose weight.

We tried him on IAMs senior and this seemed to be ok for him alongside his tablets, but when we found out it was tested on animals and we was paying so much for something that probably wasn't any better than cheaper stuff we stopped giving him it, but then in the bad weather his legs became bad again so have put him back on the J/D

    Thanks for your help :)

Oh, and forgot to add, hes also 14

I`ve had a bit of a nosy round and found that the Hills one contains eicosapentanok acid (whew hope i`ve spelt it right) which is an omega 3 fatty acid and also glucosamine and chondroitin.

The acid comes from oily fish ie herring, mackerel, salmon and sardines and also codliver oil. Apparently the fish get it from the algae that they consume.

I`ve had a look at the pero website and find that they do a food which is formulated for labradors (what breed is your oldie?) which contains similar ingredients.

The one that i noticed most is the one formulated for labradors but sounds good for your needs, it has glucosamine and chondroitin and also salmon.

    Here is a link
    http://www.pero-petfood.co.uk/component/page,shop.product_details/flypage,simon_flypage_1/product_id,4/category_id,1/manufacturer_id,0/option,com_virtuemart/Itemid,32/

I think the link may make the page behave badly but i`m not going to break it up in case it won`t work :D

I would give it a try, you could supplement with glucosamine & chondroitin tabs from a health food store (i do this with my oldie) and also give him the odd tin of sardines in oil too.

Read about the ingredients in their food on the site - i did and was very impressed. Mine are starting on a pero food when i`ve got to the end of my stock which should be around another month.

Shop around too as the prices can vary a bit.

I`ve written this post twice so far and hope that it gets posted this time as i`m at w*rk and this pc is not behaving at all.

Anyhow, have a read and see what you think.

EDIT , you will find with the legs that they do have good and bad days, even the weather has affected our oldies legs. In the past we have had german shepherds and their legs always go in later life. Its not nice for them but like i say they do have good days and bad ones. ((((HUGS)))) for your oldie.
