FREE Online DVD rental free trials. A WARNING

BE VERY CAREFUL with all of these DVD Rental companies

Sure enough they are giving you free trials BUT
Remember
They hold on to your credit card details
They count on free trial customers forgetting to cancel
Usually you cant cancel when DVD's have not been returned
You may have sent them back but they are not considered returned until they have been received by then. Being in the post does not count.

Maybe you sent what you have back but still have titles on your list. You go to cancel but find they just sent out other titles.

They can catch you out very easily

Follow these rules and you shouldn't go wrong.

Make sure that you send in your last titles in at least 5 working days before the last day of your trial. The last day being the day before they are due to take payment.
On the same day you post your last DVD's back empty your list of all titles.
Watch your account each day afterwards and as soon as you see your last DVD's showing as returned cancel your account.
Try to cancel online
Failing that call them
Screen Select is freephone 0808 2000 193
LoveFilm is a dreaded 0870 number: 0870 240 1637 but their landline is ;) 02077517500
Note: I called the landline number and they wouldn't put me through to customer services. I insisted saying I didn't wish to go through their menus and be put on hold at 8p a minute. They asked for my number and called me back

There are other companies but most are powered by screenselect or lovefilm anyway

If you have to cancel verbally ask the name of whom you spoke to and ask for an email confirmation

I did the free trial at ScreenSelect with no problems but I have heard other people with issues.

I am now with Moviestream and can't fault them. As soon as they get my last rental back they send the next one same day. I am certainly getting my "£8.99 a month"-worth from them!

PM me for a link if you are interested. They have over 22,000 titles and I'm slowly working my way through them :-)

I haven't seen any voucher codes but it looks like you dont need it. fill out the form leaving the code box blank.

1 disk at a time 2 free rentals within 2 weeks then £8.99 per month for first six months then £9.99 thereafter.
2 disks 4 free rentals within 2 weeks then £11.69 per month for first six months etc

I was thinking the same thing, you do have to keep the emails they send you re your membership(incase you have recourse) etc plus watch the deadline.

Do not sign with Amazon they are a nightmare to cancel, the link to cancel is hard to find, plus even after I did cancel they kept sending me dvd,s.

Currently i am with sofacinema they seem far more helpful with a 5 wk trial and no hassle to suspend or cancel.

    Thanks:T

That's all good advice, another little tip for anyone who uses an electron card (or any debit card), I decided i'd given out my card details to too many online sites over the past couple of years, gambling sites included, also I'd just sent 3 batches of DVD's back to 3 different companies, and didn't want to risk any of them taking another months payment out, so I went into my local branch and cancelled it, I received a new one within 3 days.
The only (minor) hassle i've had is to re-register the new one for paypal, phones, broadband etc... again, but that was no big deal and I felt a whole lot easier.
  • Done all the major ones and a few follow up trials with no probs but I have read all the comments on

    http://uk-dvd-rental-guide.com/

and kept away from any dodgyy ones

Some good advice here, but you do make it sound so scary!

Maybe I've been lucky and never had any problems, so far.
So long as you remember to cancel before end date, and anyhow
worse case scenario...you end up paying for a months DVD rental!

Good luck all and take care.

Just to add to what has only just happen to me.

I have always been lucky over the past 2 years of these free dvd trials. I was just about to come to the end of 3 months with screen select. Cancel 10 days before the end and sent the last dvd back with a proof of posting 7 days before. Usually when i sent my dvd back it had shown up the very next day. This time it took 3 days.

First i had an e-mail to say i had sent them back one of my own dvds and that they would have to send this back to me before i could cancel !! alarm bells started to ring, i am not stupid, i remember putting their dvd back into the case, i thought they are trying for another month`s payment.

Within 2 hours of that e-mail i had another to say that i had sent them an empty dvd case. They were going to send me back an empty case for me to send their dvd back, also i couldnt cancel until this had been done PLUS i would be charged £15 for the dvd.

    I thought...not a chance.

I wrote them an e-mail explaining i am not stupid, this has never happened to me before, amazing it is happening now that i have cancelled etc and that if they do take another month`s payment or charge me for the dvd i would go to VISA and action a charge back for an unauthorised withdrawel.

Well, i then had a standared e-mail back to say...YOUR ACCOUNT IS CANCELLED. No apologies or explanations. I honestly believe thay were trying it on

Just to say, it can and does happen and i was one of these that thought it wouldnt happen to me

Dont let them get away with it

We've just been caught out with screen select - although it would appear it's our fault for not reading the terms properly. :o

When you sigh up for the "5 free DVD's in 3 weeks" you have to say which subscription you would choose. We went for the 3 unlimited.

What I didn't read was that if you change your subscription during the free trial then you are charged because they then deem you as a full customer.

So having not read this I realised that if I didn't change the subscription then the next set of DVD's that turn up I would be charged from the 6th disc. I have been charged £12.49.

My Dad would be so mad if he knew I hadn't read the small print properly :o:o

So my advice, do these trials by all means but please read the small print.

Going to hang my head in shame in the corner now
