Speed cameras were difficult to police until the government made it the only crimmal offence where your right to remain silent is a crimmal offence.

When it comes to raising revenue through taxes or fines
the government ALWAYS persecutes the motorist its their favourite pastime.

Good luck if you think you can get away legally but the money you save put it in a high intrest account just in case.
  • From Customs & Excise website:

Are alternative fuels subject to duty?
Unless used within an authorised pilot project, alternative fuels are charged duty at the same rate as the fuel they replace. Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) website provides more information on alternative fuels.

The fact that you may be provided with waste oil free of charge is irrelevant (to C & E anyway) as the duty will be levied against the original cost of the oil.

Ah yes, speed camers, a perfect example of the Police looking to the Motorist to not only raise revenue via fines, but into doing thier job in the process, don't get me started on that one!
What exactly is the (overinflated) duty on fuel, and how is it calculated? If it's a percentage of the initial cost of the raw product (ie vagitable oil), it would still probably be cheaper, adding up the whole cost, than regualr diesel, wouldn't it? i am of course making a huge assumption at this stage. I haven't even looked at the price of veg oil at Netto or whatever to start with.

Eg - if you bought the stuff in bulk at a cash and carry for 20p per litre, and duty was 40%, that would still only be 28p per litre, as opposed to 80-85p, depending on where you go.

As the whole point of this board was Money Saving, please don't have a go at me via the tax man for wanting to save a few quid!
"Excuse me, this expires today, will you be reducing it?"
  • I don't think anyone's having a go at you m8. We all pay far too much to the IR and I'm all for keeping as much as possible of my earnings.

As far as using vegetable oil as diesel fuel is concerned there was an article in the Sheffield Star about 18 months ago relating to a guy that was successfully using used chip shop oil to fuel his diesel car - albeit he did have to pay duty on the oil he was using. Sorry but I can't be any more specific about it.

I understand one of the disadvantages of using vegetable oil was that your vehicle smelled like you've been cooking chips. I thought diesel was bad enough.

The Police do not make  the laws .... they uphold them!    A shock to many, I know, but that is FACT!
The Government (who you vote in!) make the laws which the Police and C&E are there to enforce.

EVERY  WEEKEND the shop windows in my local town are smashed by drunken yobs at night AND NEVER GET CAUGHT.
If the police can set up regular speed traps on my local roads why cant they set up a smashed window trap.
ANSWER PERSECUTING THE MOTORIST IS EASY WORK and they always pay their fines to keep their jobs.
Catching drunken yobs who smash windows is hard work and they have the right to remain silent and may not pay their fines.
THE POLICE ONLY UPHOLD THE LAW WHEN IT SUITS THEM

    Strong accusations there dbs!
Do tell me, have you ever served in any Police Force?
Where do you get your *facts* from?
Could it be that you are simply making sweeping statements? After all, terms such as "always" and "never" are hardly accurate, are they.

I *have* served in our County Constabulary; my husband currently serves in our County Constabulary. Neither of us made the laws, nor did/do we decide how the annual budget is resorced.
Town centres *are* covered by CCTV (run and funded by your local council - also voted in by Joe Public!) who in turn will notify the Police if they see anything going on!

Now, before we all get out of hand here, do let me ask all you Bobby Bashers - could you really, *really* do their job?
Could you really go to work knowing you are facing drunken yobs who will spit in your face, passing on goodness knows what infectious diseases just because someone has a few too many? Or, be attacked with a machette at the other end of the scale!
Could you really, *really* face attending an accident whereby some drunk has decided that the tar mac is his bed and some innocent driver (mistaking that lump in the road for a rubbish bag!) drives over the drunks head?
Or maybe you think turning up at someone's home because their partner has decided their "loved one" needed teaching a lesson and has rammed a household object so far into that person's body they are lucky to be alive is some form of pleasureable pastime instead of dealing with those smashed windows?
Or, how about being held hostage by a knife weilding mental health patient?
Could *you* truly, stand over a liquifying decomposing body, search it to find out that persons identity and have to take it in your stride because you wear a uniform? Then trot off to inform the next of kin and still maintain a stiff upper lip?
How about the day you have to pick someone barely alive off a rail line and their arm comes off in your hand?
Or the child that you literally pull out of their parents arms because the parents prefer to send that child on the school trip the following day because it cost them £6 - despite the hospital telling them the child will DIE within the next few hours without urgent medical assistance?
Oh and let's not forget those drivers who speed along merrily, lose concentration - just for a fraction mind! - and end up causing death, chaos and road blocks.
THE POLICE ONLY UPHOLD THE LAW WHEN IT SUITS THEM

Really? Perhaps you would care to give an "informed" opinion instead of just an armchair judgement ;)

All the points you have made about how it is difficult to deal with the general public commiting crimes proves my point that persecuting the motorist is just an easy option.

The cctv in my town is NOT operated by anyone because of lack of funds I have never known of a speed trap not set up by the police due to the lack of funding.

If you persecute one section of society then  try to justify it by saying the rest of your job is very hard then expect nobody to complain you must live in cloud cuckoo land.

And why have you NOT replied to the original thread of using vegetable oil as fuel or are you just waiting for a motorist to get it wrong so you can make an easy arrest!!!!! ;)
