USING VEGITABLE OIL IN A DIESEL ENGINE

I have been toying with this for a while, there has been some publicity on TV about it, and there was an article on it on Top Gear once. They ran an old (1986 C reg) volvo on it, with 3ml of white spirit added to each 997ml of USED vegitable oil. Is there any info sites out out there on this? We have a transit luton with twin tanks, so were planning to run it 50/50, as we can't afford to fill both tanks in this country!
Anybody have any further info on this, or even tried it?

Thanks for the link, I will check it out!
Fuel duty on used vegitable oil, how would that work? Hasn't the original buyer paid that? If I am given the oil as a used item, how can I calculate the duty on nothing? If I ran a steam engine and bought chairs to put in the firebox, would I have to pay fuel duty on them? The way I see it, if it's mine, I will use an item as I see fit, if I want to fill a swimming pool, dab it behind my ears or stick it in my fuel tank and I have been given it, there is no difference. Wouldn't you...........?"Excuse me, this expires today, will you be reducing it?"0 -
Had a look at the honest john site, very interesting but couldn't find anything on veg oil for diesels through the search in Discussion. Any other pointers?"Excuse me, this expires today, will you be reducing it?"0

Not being rude, but the correct spelling is VEGETABLE, so you might try that as a keyword.

Could the government actually charge duty on oil used as fuel , are they not MEANT to be promoting greener transport.
FUEL duty and vat are separate entities , and because food oil is classed as a food I think its actually exempt from vat.
BEWARE though heard of a taxi driver on another forum losing his house for back duty for the same thing , and another for red deisel.0 -
If any kind of fuel is used to power a car/van etc I think it can be taxed in the same way as normal fuel but this was only a safeguard used by governments to stop a large shortfall in taxes received. You might get away with it for a while then end up with a very big bill be carefull.0

How would you pay duty on second hand oil that was given to you? If, say the fuel duty is 15%, 15% of nothing is nothing. I would be happy to pay that, however.......... unless, C&E wanted to charge it on the original price, which would still be minimal. This would be very difficult to police, especially as biodiesel is available commercially at various outlets, though I would assume that there are addatives ect to distiguish it from mere vegitable oil.
I would also assume that everybody who has posted re tax is completely honest to the Inland Revenue ect. I know I am."Excuse me, this expires today, will you be reducing it?"0
