but as you say , no data to lose , re-install windowns in about 20 minutes
re-format or re-install windows? because I was under impression that re-installing windows will do nothing....on other hand I can't even get to dektop to do a re-format....is there anything i can do during the boot stage apart from safe mode (which stopped working after I ran anti-virus on it first time)..."To be ignorant of one's ignorance is the malady of the ignorant." is it OK to delete the C:\ partition?? It asks whether i really want to install another XP on top of an existing XP - it doesn't recommend it...so can i just delete the partition?"To be ignorant of one's ignorance is the malady of the ignorant." Amos Bronson Alcott0 -

Yes, insert the windows cd and when it asks delete the old partition then tell it to create a new one.

I tried installing without deleting first...and i got various massages that it could not find various files from the CD....such as migregdb.ex. Weird thing is that if i browse for the file it is there, but it refuses to recognise it....
any clues?
should deleting the partition avoid this problem?"To be ignorant of one's ignorance is the malady of the ignorant." Amos Bronson Alcott0 -

Yes, you should format/delete if you choose not to tackle the malware.0 -
The only problem with installing/repairing is you may get the system up and running and all may seem well but you don't know what OTHER security holes and problems that the virus or malware or Trojan has left and if it has you would be open back up to the same infection this time a lot quicker and easier
