Major problem on PC....

I have a problem with my PC where the following sequence of events happens:
1. Power up
2. Gets to Windows splash screen as normal.
3. Then a colourful red/white message comes up which looks like its part of the screen background saying:
'Spyware detected!' along with filepaths to 'Vituamonde' and 'PrivacyRemover.M64'
This message looks like a fake.
4. Then I get to the Welcome screen where I select the username I want to log-on as but then when I select the username it doesn't go any further i. it stays stuck on the Welcome screen so I can't even get to the desktop...
I have tried the following@
1. Booted up in safe-mode and run anti-spyware and AVG anti-virus which detected a load of stuff - but whenI rebooted I still had the same problem. Not only that but when I now try to boot-up into Safe mode I get the same problem there too now i.e can't get past Welcome screen!
Can someone please tell me when I can do in a situation where I can't get even to the desktop?? I cannot download anything onto machine even...so I think I'm stuck!
Should I re-format the drive? There's no real information that I would lose....
Thanks!

If there's nothing important to lose, you might be quicker formatting & reinstalling from scratchChris Elvin0

Try the AntiVir Rescue System.0

That seems sensible.
However, before you do that, grab: MBAM and having updated it, run that. See what it clears up. It is free for on demand scanning and cleaning.
What anti-virus are you running?
I can't run anything - that's the problem...i can't even get to the desktop to run any applications....
Infact - can i even re-format without getting to the desktop?"To be ignorant of one's ignorance is the malady of the ignorant." Amos Bronson Alcott0 -
Try the AntiVir Rescue System.
of course you'd want to setup your AntiVir Rescue System CD BEFORE you get locked out of your system. hehe.0 -
Would a 'repair install' help me at all?? Will it eilminate any viruses if I re-load XP?"To be ignorant of one's ignorance is the malady of the ignorant." Amos Bronson Alcott0

At this stage it wouldn't hurt to try it. Good luck.0
