Firstly you are assuming that you have to replace all the bulbs at the same time - the sensible route would be to replace one at a time as they blow. I can't believe you'd miss the odd couple of quid on your grocery shop once a month. Buying energy saving bulbs can be seen as an investment like any other - don't you have a pension, savings or intend to in the future?

  • My bulbs always seem to blow one after the other over about 3 weeks. Energy savers, too. Oh well.

Energy savers don't have to be expensive. I just bought a load of Megaman 60w replacements for 40p each (79p each delivered). There are subsidies out there where energy companies have to fund energy savings, so we can pick up good quality bulbs for small prices. Just avoid the genuinely cheap non-subsidised ones, they're the ill-coloured flickery junk people are complaining about.

Energy saving bulbs are really good at saving energy.

They are really bad at giving off light especially for the first few minutes.

Therefore I don't turn energy saving lights off until I really have to whereas I will turn off normal bulbs.

As a result, I probably pump more CO2's into the atmosphere using energy saving bulbs.

  • Energy saving bulbs give me migraines. So does dim light. I've lost out on both counts! Will I be able to get them on prescription? I know this is a reasonably common complaint...
