"Ten days left to buy traditional lightbulbs: EU ban means only low-energy ones will be on sale

Traditional lightbulbs will disappear from our shops in just ten days.

All conventional pearl, incandescent lightbulbs are being banned by the European Union to slash energy bills and carbon dioxide emissions.

The move covers every type of frosted traditional bulb, from the 60 watt pearl bulbs used in table lamps to more specialised opaque 25 and 40 watt bulbs shaped like golf balls and candles. Clear and frosted 100 watt lightbulbs will also not be on sale from September 1."

Stock up now for bulbs for decorative light-fitting unless you want to spend ££ replacing them all, and keep a supply of safety critical lights on stairs etc. if you don't want to be peering in the gloom all winter, with skin rashes and headaches.

You can get low energy spots by megaman and they are quiet good but not cheap

I got 2 11w one in bathroom it has 3 spots but I just have a dead bulb in other one and bathroom isnt a small one. They do take some time to warm up though

What do we do, we've got a dimmer in the living room, it controls a 3 bulb pendant light fitting?

"Under the European Directive, manufacturers in Europe will not be able to sell the banned bulbs to retailers. It will also be illegal to import energy-guzzling bulbs from outside the EU."

Lol I can just imagine the team of bulb sniffer dogs at all the ports:rotfl:

I bought a pack of 5 100w bulbs in Poundland this week. Didn't realise they would soon be illegal so I'll go back tomorrow and stock up for the next several decades !

I wish they'd make energy saving bulbs other than the traditional pendant type more widely available and cheaper. I have standard halogen lamps (MR16 and GU10) throughout as many flats do, but most supermarkets don't stock replacements and to order online you need to buy bulk to make the postage viable. They are never given away as freebies either.

  • Oh dear, my next year on my degree specifically requires an experiment to compare incandescent to energy saving bulbs for one of the units. I only have energy saving/led lights. I wonder if they know this?
