Oxfam Credit Card Fraud - Anyone?

Dear Money Savers,
I noticed a few days ago that on the 16th of this month, £10 had been charged to my credit card by "OXFAM LTD INTERNET OXFORD." I have neither bought anything nor donated via my card - ever, so I was confused!
Having googled "OXFAM LTD INTERNET OXFORD" but found nothing, I phoned the bank (Tesco Personal Finance (AKA RBS - I think?)) and they said they'd send a form for me to fill in to get the money back. I must admit, I expected them to freeze the card there and then!
Since then I have checked my card on-line at least three times a day to ensure no more unauthorised use is taking place. Just to add, I have full protection on-line and I am extremely vigilant with my updating, scanning etc. and I shop using good security measures.
Then, today, I receive a letter from Oxfam thanking me for the £10 donation etc.
I am suspicious that this may be an Oxfam tactic, hoping that people will say, "oh, as it's Oxfam, you'd better keep it..."
So I'm here to ask - has anyone else experienced this?

Nope. Don't think this is part of any large-scale thing from Oxfam, they'd get slated for it - you sure you haven't signed up for anything recently and not tick or unticked a box?

Thanks for the interest, but I'm sure I haven't. I've even looked back at everything we've done for the last few weeks and checked.
I can't believe that an organisation like Oxfam would do what I suggested, but before I ring them Monday morning, I wanted to check with others in case there was something fishy going on.
My initial suspicion is that it's a test by fraudsters to see if the card use is noticed, but why do it for a tenner, surely you'd order plane tickets for £1000!

Well the transaction's been made with your full name and address, and your card details - are you sure it's not a husband/wife/bf/gf/child who borrowed your card?

    Last time when I donated.

Natwest rang me and they asked if I used oxfam, this time I did and that was it.

I think fraudsters use charities in the hope that you won't report it or the bank won't notice.

I've now spent some time researching this and indeed that is the case.
In the hope it isn't noticed, fraudsters donate to charity to test the card details before they either sell or buy it. Scumbags.
I shall check with Oxfam Monday morning, but I know that we are not responsible, so shall almost certainly be cancelling the card thereafter.

    All sorted.
Phoned Oxfam and they agree it's a fraudster testing the card and that it happens all the time. SO CHECK THOSE STATEMENTS GUYS!
They were very nice and there was no pressure to stay on the mailing list or to keep the money.

  • Ive just had this happen to me, they've taken £11 so far in 2 different transactions.

So rang TSB and theyve said ive got to fill in this form and send it back so that the money can be credited back to my account.

Being only 18 this is a lot to me and cant afford to go losing money like this :(

Thanks for your help with this matter and hopefully itll be sorted soon:)
  • I work for another UK charity, and have seen something similar in our online donations - people putting through a few quid and not leaving their details to check if the card details work before using it for bigger things. Very bad news. we try to pick up on this and stop them where we can, but it could be anyone, from anywhere so it isnt easy.

good luck all, and keep an eye out, like the others say.
