on of the main causes for Punto head failure is that changing the coolant is a very dodgy DIY item, as if its not bled properly, air locks can form and cause overheating/Head going.

well i have had one 52, plate since new; ecu went before 3rd birthday covered by warranty (thankfully) other than that just tyres ,exhaust ,discs, pads and wiper blades changed
  • Ive got a 53 reg punto and (fingers crossed now) have not had that many problems with it apart from the usual wear and tear, but just watch out for the wiper blade arm thing as I had my driver side one go in the middle of town and in typical car manufacturer style they can't just replace the arm or weld it back on they had to replace the whole flaming unit at a cost of £175  my dad has an older punto too and the same thing happened to his, so just double check it looks okay before you buy.

Right from someone who is involved in car repairs the main things we see on punto's of this era are the wiper motor and linkage failing and the power steering pump failing.

The person who spent £175 to replace the motor and linkage was robbed blind - i sell them at £60 plus VAT for a brand new genuine FIAT part. The steering is relatively easy to fix too with recon units available off ebay for less than £200 all in delivered.

Even though my first comment was snotty, I have actually owned a few Punto's. My X reg one I bought new and was a piece of crap! Something fell off, broke, came loose near enough once a month. Wiper motor, steering motor, handbrake mount, rear shocker FELL off after 8 months. I don't mind the odd niggle hither and thither, but there were major things.
However, the one I bought for my OH was a delightful thing! 03 plate 1.2 Active Sport in baby blue, 19k. Went all over the UK in it and never missed a beat.

To be honest Fiat's are generally hit and miss. Get a bad 'un and you'll hate the twatting thing. Get a good one and you'll love them to bits!

Yes but the average person wont be able to fix it themselves, and a garage wont install "On you bought from e-Bay"
  • I have a punto 2000 ran only 45000 km. Last month I have to replace the engine. I have spend on the car more than I have purchased for. On all cost I will avoid PUNTO.
