Number Plates

Hi everyone, does anyone know how much a number plate replacement costs? My rear plate has an annoying line of dirt between the layers of plastic and makes the C look like an O so need to get a new one. Found one place online that seemed to be around 15quid, but will it definitely fit my car properly?
And it is just a case of unscrewing one and putting the new one on isn't it?
Does anyone know any shops that sell them so I dont have to wait for postage of one etc. I had a look on the Halfords website but couldn't find anything about them!
TIA
Heath

Halfords will make them in store so will many other factors. You need to take some documents with you http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/PersonalisedRegAndNumberPlates/DG_4022573 and then you just swap them. They may need drilling or you could use sticky fixers.

You can get a new pair of plates delivered for around a tenner on eBay, as long as they are standard fit ones. ( Which 99.9% are )

i agree with inactive, get ones from ebay for around £10, (make sure your new plates comply with our laws as they are clamping down on the slightest flaw).
if your original plates are screwed on then drill the new ones and screw these on aswell, but beware some rear plates have one way screws that can only be drilled out,my focus did.
even if you have a plate that is not standard size im sure you will find it on ebay somewhere for cheaper than halfords and you wont need to show any owners docs to prove you own the car.

Thanks. I rang halfords just to see how much they charge and it was something like £13.48 just for the one so I have definitely decided I'll try and get one cheaper than that. I think my front plate is fine but i'll have a close look and see whether it is going anything like the back one and see about getting the pair. I still havent been out to look how its attached yet (lazy arent I - its only just outside!) but its a peugeot 206 if that makes any difference!

Standard oblong plates will be fine then.

    Hello goldspanners

That would be the same as my Mondeo then I think.

I have used the sticky pads for the time being. But is it just a case of drilling the old screws out then drilling the holes in the number plate and replacing it?

    What screws would I use?

I will admit to thinking I had to take a panel out in the boot to attach a bolt to a screw/nut :D.

    Thank you

yes you will have to remove the boot interior cover, on the focus its just plastic screw with those annoying little rawlplug type clips.
i had to drill the heads off the security screws to remove them, i then just fitted the new plate with small machine screws (m4 i think) with locking nuts in behind the plastic panel, i also fitted the plastic screw covers to save the screws from rusting, they worked on the back but one of the front screws with the cover has rusted, the front plates were held on with self tapping screws,so no need for any drilling there.

I just had to tell you my embarassing story about number plates!

Last week i had to get a new rear number plate as one of the screws came loose and it was hanging off. So i nip to a local car shop that sells them. The guy comes out to look at my car and tells me that i will need my log book, no problems i brought it with me. I then asked a rather stupid question, and i'm a little embarassed to say this but i didn't know it was stupid at the time! I asked if i could have a white number plate to match my front one! :embarasse I just wanted my car to match! I didn't realise that the rear plate had to be yellow and the front one white! The guy was laughing at me, he thought i was joking! We then went back in the shop and he had to tell the other 2 guys what i had said, they all thought it was hilarious! He fitted my new numberplate and i drove off very quickly, never to return again!

I wonder how many people realise this about number plates, or is it just me!!
