Your phone may not be 3g compatible. The 3 network operates on the new 3g networks and the phones they issue are compatible with it. If your other handset is only 2g compatible, then the 3g SIM may not work in it.

Do all mobiles have to be 3G or can the newer models of mobile be modified in some way to accept 3 sims?

I think to operate on the 3 network the phone would need to be 3g compatible (ideally). Though I believe that 3 use o2's network in those areas where they have poor coverage. So maybe it is possible to access 3 via o2's 2g network.

Other postings on here have suggested that 3 take note of the handset and SIM as it accesses the network and if they note that you are constantly using o2's network by using your 3 SIM in a 2g only phone, they block the SIM. I guess this is due to the fact that they will have to pay o2 for the calls they carry on 3's behalf. I don't know how true this is, but it sounds like it could be so.

the 7210 is only GSM dual band so cannot support 3's network, hence it does not recognise the sim card ...if you really want to make use of your 3 sim then go and buy one of the crappy motorol's they are doing at the moment in some shps for £9.95 on 3 !!
