Hmmm, will have a think on that one then! Sorry, didn't realise you needed long handled tools:o

In that case Wolf tools inter-changeable heads - and get the adjustable long handle and that will do for all sorts of jobs.

With long handled garden tools, it's all in the shaft.
Narrower in the middle than the ends.

Best hoe I have is an old thing I snatched from the hand of a woman who was about to hurl it into the skip at our local tip. I think it goes back before the time of brands and, as a result, the blade really takes an edge. No stainless steel nonsense then!

Am I alone in having snapped Spear & Jackson forks? They did replace under guarantee on the second one. Maybe I'm just too 'agricultural.'

No, I've snapped a few in my time. Better quality tools are certainly not unsnappable, they're just less likely to do so than cheap ones which snap very easily in my experiance.

I haven't snapped a S&J one but have been through a fair few, we have clay soil and it's either quicksand or terracotta consistency when you try to garden.
  • as are most of the bloody rubbish forks on the market nowadays !
i sound like an old fogey lol but im only 33 !

no but seriously now im not joking here ive broken the forks off 2 spear and jackson budget forks , 1 fancy spear n jackson 30 odd quid super heavy duty ergonomic bendy handle thingy and have also bent the forks on 1 top range asda own brand stainless steel fork which i bought 2 for 6 quid each when i took the fancy spear n jackson toy back. my plan is now to continue to return them to asda as i have kept the receipts this time ! i still have a nice shiny new asda stainless steel one as backup in the shed for when the inevitable occurs...........

    this is all since feb

    anyone a better plan ???

those bulldog tools are they really any good? or wilkinson sword perhaps ?

    p.s., im only 11 stone n 5'10" on a tall heavy day !
  • For your average garden you're best buying cheap. OH (Professional gardener) has bent Bull Dog and S&J tackle within weeks and wouldn't fork out(!) for any better than smartprice.

I rescued a lovely little old wooden handled spade that had been left out for the binmen a few years ago!

It's a little bit smaller than standark - I think it is the size which is sometimes classed as being a ladies spade. It is nicely balanced and strong - far better then newer ones I have had - but again, no brand label!

Don't buy the cheapest, but a good name like S&J or Wilkinson.
But as with all things, look after them and clean them when they're going into storage.
A bit of WD40 will help prevent rusting on things like hedge cutters and loppers.
