I think all packs of laminate are sold in square metres these days. To work out the square metres needed, taking your room in case, multiply the length by the width. Eg 14ft x 12ft would be 4.26m x 3.66m which equals 15.59 square metres plus 10% for cuts and wastage.
Are you planning to take the skirting boards off or leave them on. If you are taking them off when laying your floor, leave a 10mm expansion gap between floor and wall all the way round the room. When you come to fit your skirting board back on, the board should sit on top of the floor and cover the gap. If you are leaving them on, leave a 10mm expansion gap between floor and skirting boards. Measure the perimeter of the room to be laid (add 10% for cuts and wastage) and this will be how much beading trim you will require to cover the expansion gap. The trim is fix to the skirting board and not to the floor. Thanks Mr Vampy.
Also I know another silly question but - just so I don't get this wrong, what is the best way to work out the total metres squared needed? Do you just measure the room and multiply teh dimensions?
eg say the room is 14ft by 12ft - is it as simple as 14x12 = 168 sq feet and then convert that into metres? Sorry I am a novice at all this so appreciate your help.
I understand that it is best also add 10% to cover breakage and bits that need cutting etc...0 -
I've just laid AquaLOC+ in driftwood oak (B&Q) after looking at lots of similar as I had an insurance claim. It's very tough and looks good, though I should have been moneysaving and waited for a 15% off weekend.somewhere between Heaven and Woolworth's0

I am looking at the Quickstep laminate for my hallway, dining room and living room. Does anyone know the difference between the perspective 2 and the perspective 4? I know its the number of grooves - i.e 2 grooves vs 4 grooves...but what exactly does that mean to the layperson? Is one easier to fit than the other? They appear to be the same price...
Thanks for your help.
Some laminates are thicker and have wider planks than others. Mine is Vintage Oak, see here > http://www.quick-step.com/europe/uk/en/floor/401088.aspx. Best to see before you buy. Many outlets have a range on display. You can order samples so you can colour match the flooring with your existing furniture /decor at home. :j"A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Hi Guys
Thanks for all the tips. The measurement units in feet was just how we had measured the room - I was intending to convert it to metres before buying anyway. Its very easy with all the online tools.
Hadn't thought about removing the skirting. The place has just been redecorated and all the skirting has been painted. Does it make a difference?
I had looked at loadsa samples before deciding on the quickstep perspective. I am told that perspective 2 makes it look like longer planks which is the look I want to go for so have decided on that one. I like the thickness off it, looks like great quality. Going to order it today. Hopefully have it laid by next weekend. Fingers crossed.
Thanks again for all the help folks.0 -

IMHO it looks far better when the skirtings are removed and refitted. Most fitters will try to talk you into the easy fit option. FYI, skirting material is cheaper than three quarter round edging, so even if it does get damaged, so what?

perspective 2 has the groved edge on the two longest sides of the plank
perspective 4 has groved edged on all sides of the plank.0 -
Hi having read through the posts i can recommend Quick Step Perspective 4. But have you thought of BALTERO flooring. Its exactly the same as Quick Step. My boyfriend having laid both types of flooring (Hes got Quickstep Perspective 4 and ive got Baltero Perspective 4) and found them exactly the same. Same thickness and im not sure but they maybe made by the same Company. Baltero is a lot cheaper too as your not paying for the Quickstep name. You can get both online or at Allied Carpets if there still trading. Weve both had our floors for two years and i can honestly say that they still look as perfect as when they were fitted. My boyfriend fitted mine and changed the skirting boards to match. None of its chipped, warped or lifted (Hes an expert fitter it took him hours because im ultra fussy lol0
