Can anyone recommend a good, not expensive, 400gb+ external hard drive?
Looking to move all my music and movies off pc onto it.

If you move them, and it fails, you lose them.

Aye - my external crappy packard bell (second hand from ebay) is packing in - having a nightmare at present managing several external hard disks plus old pc to store backups. GRRRRR
So you need at least two external backups, one being a backup of the backup :rotfl:
Plus if you are paranoid - get a third one in case there is an earthquake.0 -
look up ebuyer.co.uk , good prices, good gear and very good service
ps, their ebuyer brand are good value , also have forum where customers talk and info0 -

so are they a bad idea?
is there another solution?
are external drives not portable and therefore made to move?0 -
yeah you can move them but they don't like it. They really don't like being dropped!
You can get ToughDrives and SATA hard drives (i think) which are more stable. I tend to leave mine next to PC and move it carefully if I need to take it to work.

So long as you don't mistreat them they are just as reliable as drives in the PC itself. The drives inside the USB enclosures are just standard 3.5 (or the more expensive 2.5) drives that are used in PCs and laptops.
SATA drives are no more inherently reliable than the older PATA. The odds are a new external drive will have a SATA drive inside it these days but you'll pay more for an eSATA interface in addition to or in place of USB.0
