i've got an Inspiron 6000 as well :D I can use it on my lap for a little while - the fan tends to kick in and cool the cpu down if I've been doing something demanding. I think the power supply (inside the laptop) heats up too much though - maybe that's why dell don't do the 6000 anymore

I can't find any power settings to change apart from the obvious switch off screen after x mins etc.
is it really that bad you need to dive into those settings? is it still under warranty? perhaps give dell a call because although mine gets warm it is ok to place on my lap, not that I do very often. It shouldn't be unbearable though, well mine isn't anyway

Looks kinda interesting - though I would expect a laptop to be designed properly without the need for one of those... My laptop isn't bad enough to warrant one of those ;)

Ah well a lot depends on how well you want to look after your lappy by keeping the CPU cool, as for mine well, its photo progs galore so very intensive use most days.

    I'm very inventive

I have my laptop on the arm of my sofa but it got too hot just sat on the leather so I have it on a tray with a cushion under one edge so that there's a gap underneath for some airflow.

    Tecknikul eh? :D
Just run, run and keep on running!

Mine's got a Pentium M which is quite cool - it's just the power thing that heats up after a while - what do you mean about it being taken care of? It doesn't harm the laptop does it to be warm??

A cooler laptop will enhance the life of the CPU and the CPU paste and a cooler laptop runs a lot faster, mines ice cool and loads so quick its maddening.

Laptops do get warm just the way they are made. If you think about it all the guts are between the keyboard and desk so an inch or two thick. So of course it does not have huge surfaces to dispate the heat like a tower or desk top. They also have much more room in them then laptops tend to have. To allow better cirulation of air.

Anything that over heats can cause problems. If you machine keeps over heating then it tends to shut down or re-boot as the CPU is getting way to hot. Could even damage the CPU.

But laptops now a days tend to have cut down cpu's chip sets. As a lot of cpu chipsets need better fans to keep them cool.

Mind you in this weather just being sat in from of my laptop makes my hands sweat.

Mine's pretty slow to load but that's probably due to the antivirus, zonealarm, defender and the other rubbish dell have loaded on here  I'm going to disable some of it with msconfig ;) methinks
