If it is a Lexmark or HP ...it possibly is.0

It is pretty standard practice to supply very low capacity cartridges with new printers.
If the carts for yours are expensive and you can't get cheap compatibles consider changing to an Epson or some other brand that you can get cheap cartridges for (no doubt other recommendations will follow).0 -
I could never get substitute cartridges to work with my Epson, but the HP one at work does just fine.0

also with HP the XL versions of the cartridges are better and cheaper based on the amount inside them0

I have just bought the HP Deskjet F4280 which takes the 300 or 300xl ink cartridges, does anyone know where is the cheapest place to buy these either online on in the high street, and also, is there any cheaper alternatives around which will work with this printer... TIAIt`s nice to be important, but its more important to be nice.

I always look at the price of ink before buying a printer.
If the cost of a full set of ink is more than half the cost of the printer, then I don't think it is worth it..
this obviously means I buy a high price printer, but i have only bought 2 printers in the past 9 years, and my current canon is still going strong.

unsung , but brother dpc 330c is good value for all in one and ink prices at inkemporium.co.uk are great0

I always buy genuine, unused, in date cartridges off ebay, about half what they are in the shops, never had a bad one yet (as long as you choose ones which state the best before date and make sure you don't get remanufactured by mistake). Also check if the old cartridges are recylable for teco clubcard points (100 points each, or they were before they started fiddling with the points system).0

Buying "Genuine" things of E-Bay is the sure way to get "Fakes"0

Regarding the purchase of a new printer supplied with smaller capacity cartridges, my father recently bought an identical Canon xx inkjet printer (sorry can't remember the model) and before unpacking it I told him to use the new cartridges in the old printer, rather than setting up the new printer with the new cartridges. Reason being when you setup a new inkjet, usually the print head sucks up a good proportion of the ink into a reservoir which depletes cartridge life further. So far the cartridges have lasted well, but it's subjective as he doesn't print anywhere near the same amount as I do.0
