Government Car Scarpage scheme is a joke

i was interested in this deal at first then when i call each dealer garage i find out i need to be spending at least 8k

wow so the governments idea of getting us out of debt and getting the car industry moving again is to get us all in debt furthur

im happy to spend 4k on a car but there is no way im doing this,
i foolishly actually thought i was going to get a good deal,

Nissan have a nice pixo model for 6k but this is no in the deal,
thanks for nothing Mr brown cant wait to leave this country, i hate the uk more and more each month

My understanding was that the scrappage scheme was to kick start flagging car sales and save the car industry and peoples jobs rather than get people out of debt.

I mean how can people buying cars get them out of debt, seems a silly comparison.

the scheme is flawed in a way though for the majority of the people who it is being targeted at, people with 10 year old cars as they have these for a reason surely?

no doubt most people would be tempted at a brand new car with no MOT's needed for 3 years a nice 3 year warranty but no doubt all these people will be saving their £2k on the deal and then paying a lot more in finance as they don't have the money available to pay it off in one go.

The other point is that with cars around the £15k mark you would probably get more discount by haggling as well as trading the car in.

I think it is an ok scheme if you have the money ready to put down on a low end bottom range car but not otherwise.
  • well I've never heard of there being an 8k limit.

The other thing to remember is not all models are included and only half the 2000 comes from the government. Given that your old car will have some value anyway it's not allways the best deal.

Kia offer the GSS on the picanto

    from £4495

I want a new car and my car misses out by one day, my car was registered on the 01 September 1999 and to be eligible it has to be on or before the 31st August 1999.

I thought it may have been waived because it was only one day but was told it cannot.

I am gutted as at the moment the finance without the £2000 off from scrappage scheme is to much per month for me but with scrappage and a deposit it would be very affordable.

I am hoping they extend the scheme as there are dealers and organisations etc pushing the goverment to extend it, i am waiting on a bit to see if it does get extended as i would love a new car.

Fingers crossed maybe it will or maybe it won't.

Cheap road tax, cheap monthly payment with scrappage scheme etc makes me really wanting a new car plus having a new car would be nice anyway.

    Hi,

I did check out Nissan but they are much more expensive than the car i was hoping to go for.

I am consdering a Hyundai i10. With metallic paint, to be precise it was Hyundai i10 Comfort manual 5 door with metallic paint costing £8355 in total.

Nissan for a basic nissan are more expensive, it is life really, i just have to hope it gets extended and if not deal with it lol, althou i am online everyday at som point checking the news etc to see if a descision has been made yet on extending the scheme.

Plus on the micra there is a 10,000 milegae limit and each mile over you have to pay for, some times i go over sometimes i dont so need around 12000 - 15000 miles per year.

Well the Hyundai i10 comfort is £8355 OTR RRP. You should be able to get some off that price, also if your car was new in 1999 that makes it just 10 years old, what is, mileage etc. As it may still be worth a few hundred quid anyway. I'd be surprised if you couldn't get anything off, but, just noticed your other thread about finance so it seems you've not even spoken to Hyundai about what finance deals they can do px etc...

Hyundai offered me £500 for my 1999 V reg Ford KA, althou ten years old on 1st september 2009 it misses the scheme for one day.

Hyundai did not say anything about dropping the price and only £500 for my car means i would need to find an extra £1500 for shortfall that i could have had form scrappage scheme plus i would be putting in £1000 deposit.

i would be taking finance out over 36 months (3 years) with £1000 cash deposit and if goverment extends scheme £2000 off that in total knocking off £3000.

If hyundai was willing to knock off £1500 lol then i would be laughing all the way to the dealer.

    Thank you,
    Mat
  • Also it appears you can buy a 1 year old one for about 6-6.5k, again that's the asking price so why not get 1 year old one, px your car and you may be lucky to only need to find 5k
  • Well given that £1000 comes from Hyundai for the scrappage amount suggests they would knock some off.

They won't just offer the money off you need to go to a couple of dealers and haggle.

Look at it this way. Your car is worth £500, so they are not giving you £2000 off, only £1500 off. They claim £1000 of this from the goverment. This means they are knocking £500 off the price and giving you £500 for your car. That's where I would start I.e. £1500 off including your car. They are no worse off than if your car was 1 day older. Then factor in the kickback from the finance if you go with them.

thanks for the info and advice.

I am going to go to my hundai dealer and ask that if i give a £1000 deposit and they give me £500 for my car will they knock off £1000 or £1500 or the price to cover the shortfall that i could have had on scrappage scheme.

Do you think a dealer would knock betwenn £1000 - 1500 off a new car?

I feel rude to ask lol.

Edit my mileage on KA is 64000, which is low i think and worth more than £500.
