Aviva making credit checks without permission

My DH has had a credit check recorded on his file by Aviva, for this July.
He was last insured with them in 2007, and we would never consider insurance with them again, or even request a quote from them.
Do we have any comeback over this, and what should we do? I understood that a company had to have your permission to credit check you?

Have you used any comparison sites for a quote recently0

Thats where its from, the comparison sites get you to tick to agree you will pass your details to third parties eg the other Insurers. Some of them do credit checks, apparantly they are not proper credit checks as in for loans0

Thanks very much for that - I had no idea.
Will think on next time! Please do not confuse me with other gratefulsforhelp. x0 -
It comes up quite a lot, you may find this thread helpful http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1639299&highlight=comparison+site+credit+check
I'm surprised you have not also complained about getting loads of phone calls from a load of Insurers about the quotes on the comparison sites. Or were you wise enough to give a false number0 -

That's Direct Line.0 -
The amusing thing about Direct Line making a song and dance about the comparison sites is that they are on the comparison sites with their other brand Churchill0

It might just be the "Free" contents cover deal they are offering.
