There are several online companies that you can buy a tree direct from and they will send it out to you in a box. I did this recently as thank you gifts for our mums at my own wedding and got them a beautiful young tree that can be kept in a tub on the patio or planted. Each came with a printed card with a message I'd specified and I put some nice paper around the pot at the bottom and added a ribbon. It looked lovely, was something a bit different and cost £25 including delivery.

We had a list, but many people didn't buy off it (fine by me!), some of my favourite gifts were: a vintage cake stand (just one tier, wouldn't have been too pricy as my sister who got it is a student), a sketch of our wedding venue, a model wooden boat personalised with our names (I love the seaside!), some Moomins glasses (we have a thing about the Moomins) and the ingredients for making waffles complete with a personalised recipe with our photos on (Belgian friends).

I always aim to buy off-list unless I'm not entirely sure of the couple's taste (don't want to give them something they don't like or use), I've made up hampers of food before which have gone down well.
Got married 23rd May 2009, many thanks to all on the Weddings and Anniversaries board for their help and support!
