Anyone else had problems with RoomsNet.com?

  • I happened to land on this website when Googling for "roomsnet.com" and was surprised to read all these comments. I used them 5 times in 2007, 2008 and 2009 without any problems and I just completed another booking with them few weeks ago. I have never encountered any problem what so ever with them, and I found their customer support to be excellent. May be I am one off luck guys! Or may be there had been some unfortunate events for several of you guys, may be linking back to a same origin (credit crunch or whatever). Moreover, I'm surprised to see the volume of "newbies" commenting against roomsnet on this thread, supported by someone who self proclaim as a "ABTA travel agent". I smell something fishy! We know you guys compete over business, and I don't think it's an ethical business practice to thrash another company in an open forum. Customers should be made aware of such "travel agents" who run down competitors in such unethical mannar. Admins of MSE should pay attention on this. Sometimes, "self promotion" can come in the way of degrading a competitor. Finally, I am sad about the inocent people who had been affected by roomsnnet's mess up, but I cannot stop feeling that there are more than "genuinely affected" humans writing on this forum.

It seems like some of the national or international intermediary booking agents which contracted with Roomsnet and also contracted with the hotels have gone down in hard financial times. But it also seems like Roomsnet just weren't paying some of their intermediary agents in time - maybe they didn't have fast international payment services set up with all of their agents. Which is far from good enough if it leads to their agents cancelling because they weren't paid by the expected time.

I haven't found any complaints from the last few months, so it would be interesting to find out about that. I just booked last week with Roomsnet, and should be spending my 2nd day of 2 in R.o.I. today, but I was too ill to go, annoyingly. I phoned the hotel to let them know I wouldn't make the first night, when the receptionist checked my booking and found it, confirming it was fully paid in advance so I didn't need to worry.

My hotel voucher said the booking was made through the big supplier "Hotelbeds", who have been the supplier agent for another booking I made before, I think Hotelopia, and they are very well known in the industry. Which would make me trust Roomsnet now. But you don't know if Hotelbeds is just an agent for certain areas / countries / hotels. In regard of someone saying their site looked "funny" - though I hadn't booked with Roomsnet before last week, I have visited their site since last year or before, and it always looked fine to me, as good as any other budget Web travel agent site. I wonder what that man thinks a fishy looking web site looks like. Now Roomsnet looks very good and has a kind of travel social networking element attatched to it - which makes it more attractive than other sites. Also I got an email from Roomsnet between booking and the booked dates, a very long one, with a lot of ideas for the area I had booked to stay in. (Hotels.com, Expedia etc. have never done that for me, it is a good message.)

Roomsnet are big on "loyalty discounts" now - this was my first booking with them and, though I had not had the chance to have been loyal yet, I still had a full 20% discount on their rate which was anyway cheaper at first than hotels.com and the other budget agents I've used.

I wouldn't get a refund by Roomsnet terms, as I knew when booking, because the time for cancelling with them is a few days before, which is not untypical with these online travel agents. I found one recently who allowed cancellation up to the day before for nearly no charge, I can't remember which, I'll have to have a look.

I'm interested in the recent months if any people have booked and paid for accommodation through roomsnet and cancelled more than 3 days before their reservation - was the refund full and in reasonable time?
