Exploding iphones & ipods

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/4/20090819/twl-exploding-iphones-prompt-safety-inve-41f21e0.html

I bet 'someone' (you know who ) will be along shortly to tell us how wonderful this is and its a 'feature' because you don't get this with other phones, only the superior design and quality of Apple products .

 Although I can probably set fire to my own pocket for a bit less than £1000.

This is old news, very old news. News for people with an axe to gring eh

Its been going on with years not just with apple. Sony have had laptops with similar problems as have Dell (though they blame sony). All I know is I know of a huge number of people with apple products and none of them have had this problem. Apples main fault as with the other companies involved is not reaction to complaints quick enough

If your buying an ipod or iphone for £1000 your being seriously ripped off.

The original poster can be forgiven for not realising this is old news because it is rumoured that Apple have been trying to hush it up and only giving refunds if the customer agrees to keep quiet about the problem.

It's in the news again today because the EU have decided to investigate the issue.

A more measured report of this is here.

    This, too, is of pertinence.

Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:

As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

I knew you loved me! :kisses:

Actually if anyone is interested I have a Chinese exact replica of an iphone (even has the fruit logos), its broken but there is no fire risk. I may be willing to sell it. Its useful to pose with whilst you leave the real one at home on its velvet cushion (as it deserves!)

    I like shiny!
  • This has been going on for a while now, but apple have threatened people with law suits if they dared to mention it. Perfectly acceptable behaviour for a large organisation, don't you think?

Many phone manufacturers have had problems with batteries catching fire; Nokia alone had to recall 46 million batteries.

Apple have been making people sign non-disclosure agreements for settling out of court, which is pretty standard practice.

You've never heard on the news that so-and-so "settled out of court for an undisclosed sum"?

    Ahha!

People expect Nokia to catch fire because you are not paying for Apple's superior technology. I believe there is an 'extinguish my phone' app available at a modest £4.99.

My fake iphone made by the highly respected Chinese cloner CECT has never caught fire and I don't expect it will as it doesn't umm.. even boot up any more

You pays your money... you get a better class of molten lithium pocket lining with an Apple.
  • Actually this is a very real problem with any device (not just ipods) that has a lithium polymer battery. When these batteries get too hot they can catch fire and explode - its just a feature of the technology.

If you leave these devices in direct sunlight or anywhere hot you are asking for trouble even if the device is not faulty. I believe this is usually put as a warning in the instructions.
