Best things about living alone: not having to explain myself, not having to put up with incessant rubbish on tv all the time, leaving the washing up for 3 days if I want to, knowing that the bath scum/hair in the plughole is yours, being able to stay online playing games or chatting on IM till 2am without anybody saying "don't you have to be at work early tomorrow", eating what *I* want - and not eating if I'm not hungry just 'cos it's lunchtime
Also, everything I earn is mine - I don't have to share it!!
Worst things: cooking is often a bind for one(and I love cooking!), you can't blame anyone else for the mess & having to do *everything* around the house & pay all the bills on my own
It's also sometimes difficult to go places or even make new friends on your own, esp when the majority of people you come into contact with are coupled!0 -

you don't have to live with someone to have sex.0 -
Best things: Going to bed when I want to. Getting up when I want to on my day off. Taking my breakfast back to bed (surrrounded by pressies on Birthdays & at Christmas). Being able to have egg & chips with bread & butter and lots of tomato ketchup on Christmas day. Generally, doing what I want when I want!
Worst things: Can't be bothered to cook a proper meal for myself - it just seems too much of an effort. I often get takeaways or eat out. Special offers are always 2-for-1!! Why can't they make things half price?? Having someone to share those little things with, like a funny paragraph in the newspaper or a beautiful view. DIY
Also: Having lived alone for 30 years I love going out to the cinema, theatre or for a meal on my own. I take holidays alone, too; if I didn't I wouldn't get one. The day times are fine but evenings can be a bit boring when you've seen the film showing - as a woman I still feel uncomfortable going into a pub alone. (A few years ago I got some funny looks from a barman on one holiday when I went to a pub with entertainment - think he thought I was on the pull - but he showed me a bit more respect later when I well-handled a couple of lager louts.0 -
Having lived on my own for 11 years and being 35 so never been married, I love having the bed to myself with nobody keeping me awake tossing and turning and pinching the bed clothes. I love watching what I like on t.v, having things in exactly the places I want them and being able to have some quiet time on my own.
The downsides, as mentioned by other posters, are not having anyone to help with the DIY and nobody to take care of you when you're ill is a real big one for me. There's nothing worse than waking up ill in the middle of the night and nobody there to make sure you're ok or hug you when you're sad. It's all too easy for friends who are in relationships to not be around when you really need them and for you to have to handle things on your own - especially if family members don't live anywhere near you.0 -
I do not speak from experience so please feel to ignore me but is there not a scheme where you can swap skills for instance offer cooking, sewing etc in exchange for DIY or gardening - it might also be a good way to make new friends with similar interests0

This made me chuckle. Today I've shortened a pair of winter curtains for my neighbour and he cooked my tea.....................I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Best thing not having to watch football, but I would put up with that just to have my lovely late husband back as he could always make me laugh and even after over six years I still miss that humour.0

Having a table to yourself in a restaurant, which actually gives the waiter room to put everything down without having to re-arrange everything that is already there !0
